They supposedly provide SEO and marketing data to their customers, which may even include advertisers trying to figure out the value of a site before giving it higher or lower quality ads.
They're largely harmless to me, but apparently they cause some serious server load on some sites, as evidenced by countless articles across the web screaming about them.
