Have y'all ever sent an email from one website advertising another one you own. For example, I just sent out an email to all 15k members of my one forums promoting GameHandout, instantly I gained around 10 members and a few of them started to post on it. Has anyone done this? I felt kind of wrong doing it, as it had nothing to do with the current website. Is this frowned on generally? Or is it something that a lot of people do?

nope because I never have owned two website's together. But if I di then definitely I be doing the same 🙂

Just can't do it if you don't own the site unless you had permissions. Talking about it 😉 Anyone here willing to do a email exchange where I send an advertisement email and you do the same in returns

I've done this. The second time we were hacked, I sent an email from the hacked site saying we were starting over because of the hacking. Some have come to the new forum, but mostly I got responses saying stuff like good job or congratulations on not giving up on the forum. FYI: We were hacked while on the free host, but none of the accounts had been removed which is why I was able to get in touch with my members in a timely fashion

So, it worked out alright for you then? It's now 1am here which has been around 10 hours after the mass email and I've gained around 30 members to GameHandout. Around 10 of them have actively posted around the forums. I've had one user send me some free games for future giveaways, as well as another offering to trade his games for GH$ (Forum Currency) which is always helpful 😀

So, for me. The Email has been a success.

I dont think there is anythig unethical about it as long as your members are fine with it. I have done this in the past and I didnot meet any resistance for what I have done.

It really depends on what you're members think of it because some people might not like it and just think it of just advertising your site! It also depends on what niche it is because sending emails out to people on niches like gaming, might interest a lot of people though. It could be dangerous though, because your site could get hacked!

For the most part it worked. We don't have EVERYONE back yet, so far I've gotten lots of comments and good luck wishes...I mean we had 300 some members before we were hacked! Just like brand new forums, reboots don't become successful overnight. Also, we were on a free hosting environment with a fair bit of limitations, which meant no mass email feature, which meant I am actually had to sit down and manually go through 300 some members, which meant trying to figure out who all had duplicate accounts, which technically is a no no, but I had made exceptions on a case by case basis, had to open my email client and do mass email that way.

It depends on the situation and member base. I wouldn't really appreciate spam emails just because I'm on the mailing list as such however if it was something similar I wouldn't mind as much.

Like, if I was a member of a promotion forum and I got emails about an anime forum ran by the owner, I wouldn't be impressed but if it was about SEO or something related to the niche of the forum, I wouldn't mind

I fully understand that. My 2 forums are kind of similar. My main forum (14.5k members) is full of nothing but game developers. So, I figured they wouldn't mind checking out a gaming community. If anything, they might be more interested in getting with us to help distribute and get their personally made games out there 🙂

Then I would say in your circumstance this is a great idea 🙂

Never sent them but if a forum I am a member of starts taking advantage of their email system, I'll make sure all their future emails automatically go into the spam folder.

Hmm, this feels like a violation of intergalactic law to me. I wouldn't be too offended I guess, but unless executed really well, it would feel like you were giving away my information, even if you also own the other site.

I haven't done this before, I only have one site, but as long as the niches are similar I am fine with it. I've gotten emails before where the site advertised is a polar opposite and it doesn't cause me to want to check the site out. It's more annoying especially if it is sent out more than once.
