Would you rather have an SEO-Friendly domain (bluebonnet.com) or a Web 2.0 domain (bluebon.net)?

Depends on the name of course. If its like YourEntertaiment.com, Id rather have like YourEnt.com as its WAY shorter. I would only do that for Long domains.

SEO for non-unique things (forum, blog).
Web 2.0 for unique things (social networking site, new software, etc).

I agree with KG.

Sites like facebook, twitter or linkedin may sound a little silly, but have a look at where they are now.

Either way, both are marketable.

My website's name is a contraction of two words, one of which relevant for SEO. My domain name isn't very optimized, but I made sure to make the site as SEO friendly via .htaccess as much as possible, to make up for it. Overall, it really depends. If it sounds nice, ten go for it. I wouldn't suggest going for it just for the SEO or just for the silly little trick like bluebon.net.

I second Volux's opinion. It has to depend on the niche of the forum, and you shouldn't go black or white. Grey FTW.

I'd get both of them if I can. But if bluebonnet was already taken, I would just come up with something else. I say that because every time you advertise your site, the one with the "normal" domain is going to get some benefit.

Also, note delicious.com started as del.icio.us, ie. a Web 2.0 domain, so really, if you have a vision and be creative, you can go quite far.

Why did they switch?

The site was redesigned so a proper TLD was needed to give them a fresh new look. Either way, both domains still work.
