SEO - Keyword Targeting, Tools & Practice!

I am currently trying to better the SEO for my website.
I used the keyword tool on google adwords to find keywords/phrases that are relevant to my website.
I choose 10 keywords with alot of monthly searches, but not too much as im starting out & i think it will be slightly easier to get better rank in the less used keywords. I also checked the competition on each keyword/phrase & went for low - med competition. I then added these keywords into my website/webpage & then started to build article, blog, forum & web-directory back-links to my website using the keywords/phrases i choose as the anchor text in the backlinks.

This is as much as i have done so far regarding keyword targeting.
Is there anything about what iv done that you would consider wrong?
Is there anything else that i should do to improve what iv done already?
Is there something that im not doing in regards to keyword targeting that i should do to help improve my results?

Please comment on this thread with your thoughts as im quite new to the SEO game & will appreciate any help, tips, etc.. given to me!

Did you make sure that you had "Exact Searches" checked on the left hand side of the Google Keyword Tool when you searched? That way it will show you the exact number of searches for that term per month.

You should also look to have your main 3 keywords show up 4-5 times, including in your meta description and title if possible. Your main keyword should definitely be in both of those. This will give you good keyword density. Then just create quality content and watch your self move up the rankings.

I didnt notice that check list was on the adwords tool.
I just used the tool as it was. I just checked there, and only "Broad" was ticked, so that is what i must have used last week when i choose the keywords/phrases.
Do you think i should re-choose my keywords using only "Exact" ?
or Should i re-choose them using "Broad" & "Exact" checked?

Iv not done to much yet in terms of purchasing backlinks & i can change my forums signatures, meta-tags, descriptions, etc easily, so im glad i found this out now.

Don't worry about the reputation point, it is probably because you are new. Once you reach a certain amount of posts you will probably have the ability, like 10 posts or something. Exact searches should be the only one checked, and then you can sort the information by clicking local monthly searches on the sorting options. That will tell you exactly how many times a keyword is being entered each month, and by countries that are native.

Right, i will search the keywords iv already choosen first using "Exact" only this time, then ill search new ones to see if there is any that are better.

Do you know a good tool that i can use to check for keyword density on my page?
As far i can see, google adwords doesnt tell me the percentage for each keywords that are on my page.
