This topic is, like the title says, for the discussion of server operating systems. Be it your favorite Linux distribution, Windows Server, or a less popular systems such as SmartOS or FreeBSD, opine on your preferences. But please, don't insult, and be civil.

I use Windows cause it's better for gameservers. Linux is better for web though.

I used Linux for web and proxy servers and windows for domain servers.
I'm like a pro with Server 2003

How is Windows better for game servers?

Some gameservers can't even run on Linux. ALTHOUGH Linux is good for Java based games.
Mind naming a few?? From what I have seen any big name game can have servers running on linux. Heck some ONLY have servers for linux but not the game itself.

Anyways for Server OS, FreeBSD or Cent OS(Linux Distro) would be the best.

Yeah, I'd also like to see some names, although I wouldn't put it past the standard game dev (I know quite a few.) to ignore Linux altogether, and just say "Windows is what I'm used to; Linux is weird and stupid." Not all video game developers are like this, but I have been told these words nearly word-for-word by actual developers.

Have you ever heard of DragonFly BSD or SmartOS? They're also pretty good.

I personally love windows XP, mostly because that is the one i have used ever since i got my first computer, but i have also used a Linux VPS and i did not like it at all i prefer windows because i think it's simple and i'm very good with XP.

WinXP is not a server OS. WinServer 2003 is a server OS.

Windows Server csts too much, in my opinion.

Windows XP Pro has some server OS features which are good enough for small networks, and home networks.

I agree Microsoft software cost too much compared to Linux which cost nothing in most cases.

Dragonfly is a desktop variant of freebsd it isnt meant for server usage. 😉

FreeBSD and NetBSD are usually the BSD's used for servers.

Linux is not for everybody. I see companies have completely Windows. People say that Linux is for the coding or for smart people. I find Linux servers are the best for webserver.

Hmm I never tried FreeBSD.

On my vps, Debian, apparently its best for a bukkit server.

People say that because Linux has always been seen as the "Geek" version of windows.

Franky, Linux, CentOS in particular, is much more secure and fast loading that Windows. I work as a web developer and have used both Windows 2008 and many different Linux distro's and found CentOS to work the best, closely followed by Debian. This was the case when using cPanel on some setups and no cPanel on others.

Dragonfly BSD is advertising benchmarks with Postgres, because their actual goal is scalability and related fields, not desktops.

SmartOS is not BSD, just so you know. Also, what about OpenBSD?

Actually there are quite a few companies where they will be running a variety of Linux based and Windows Based servers depending on what they are doing. However we do see Windows Servers in companies with large offices because it's one of the easiest ways to lock down the workstations and easiest ways to manage a large some of users.

The new CODs, Halo Custom Edition, Red Orchestra 2. Those are just popular ones.

Windows Server 2012 Datacenter edition is what we use at Rat Hosting.
Yes, the software is pretty expensive, but for what you get, it's worth it.
You get the professional service, professional features, and everything you need to make your business a success. Windows Server is perfect for everyone, but especially developers who work with databases. As Windows Server supports MySQL (as does Linux) but also MSSQL. ASP.NET developers and businesses who use the Windows framework cannot survive without Windows. Notice Namecheap use Windows (.aspx). They're not the only ones. Windows is designed so well, that's why it's so expensive. Of course, everyone has their own personal tastes. Some people hate Windows. 😛
