So, I recently suggested to someone to utilize some of our services to gain exposure for their site's community. You see, the site has huge amounts of traffic but mainly for the game help they have available. Their community is on the back burner and isn't promoted at all.

The owner's response was basically that using anything offered by FP would be damaging to their site's SEO.

What methods of advertisement do you feel are more harmful than helpful? Why?

I think he was just saying that to be discouraging. I've been using FP for a while and to be really honest with you. It has helped and done volumes for my forum. Thats just my point of view though.

Also, I think any advertisement is good for a site. But thats just me.

Yes, i totally agree with your comment.

I don't see why FP would hurt anyone's SEO. Is he/she suggesting that google devalues a website each time you post a nofollow link to that website, or that google has a big database somewhere of websites which, if a link is posted to website A from that website, then website A looses SEO? Neither makes all that much sense. If that were the case, then I could hurt my competitor by posting a link to their website on this forum.

He may have been suggesting that since FP has so many outgoing links, they are diluted. I mentioned to a web designer that I had gotten started in this forum to learn more about SEO, to get some links, and to share knowledge. He said while the links may be dofollow, they could be diluted so much that they won't be given much weight.

I don't know how accurate his theory is, but it makes sense.
