I'm sure this is for restaurants that don't maintain standards. No way would every place get away with it.

I have to agree with @Demon_skeith. If you don't clean and maintain them like you would washing dishes and keeping your appliances clean then obviously you're going to have problems like that.

I know one time I ate at a usual place and they served me a white soda, look fine, but man was the taste nasty! Not sure what was in it but I did get a free meal out of it.

People have been cutting corners for a long time now to save a bit of money. I am not surprised at all! When I did drink pop, I had stopped ordering it from restaurants. One, it was expensive, two, it tasted "differerent".
