Should Prisoners over 70/75 remain in prison ? - I mean criminals who have not committed murder, rape ?

I thought about this today after reading the news on Ronnie Biggs ...............

Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs has been taken to hospital with a suspected broken hip and a chest infection, his son Michael said. The 79-year-old is being treated for the infection in Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in Norwich and will be seen by an orthopaedic surgeon.

Biggs, from Lambeth, south London, is being held on the hospital wing of Norwich prison.

He is eligible for release on July 3.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw is expected to make a decision on the case within days.

Biggs was a member of a 15-strong gang which attacked the Glasgow to London mail train at Ledburn, Buckinghamshire, in August 1963, before making off with £2.6 million.

He was given a 30-year sentence, but he escaped from Wandsworth prison in south west London in a furniture van after spending 15 months in jail. He was on the run for more than 30 years, living in Spain, Australia and Brazil, before returning to the UK voluntarily in 2001.

Michael Biggs said his father was found on the floor of his cell following a suspected fall.

He said: "I think he is OK but obviously very concerned that this is all happening the week he was hoping to come out of prison. I'm on my way to hospital to see him."

Biggs is barely able to walk, is fed through a tube and is expected to be cared for following his release by Barnet Council and the local Primary Care Trust near where his son lives in north London. His family has said he hopes to be free to celebrate his 80th birthday on August 8, 46 years to the day since the heist.

What do you think ?

I feel that aged offenders that have not comitted atrocities should be released from prison, released from the burden to the tax payer and allowed to live their last years with their families.

You guys ???

No.

He commited a crime, he should endure the punishment.

If he hadn't escaped he'd have been out decades ago and enjoying his last years.

He made a decision to escape and he should face the consequences of that decision.

Exactly.
They did the crime. I don't give a damn whether they're old or not. You don't get a get out of jail free card at 75 because you committed a crime years prior.

I don't know.

I think if someone has been in prison for most of their lives, then I think they should have the right to spend their last days with their family.

I say after the 75 mark, if they've been there X amount of years, their case should be reviewed and they should be vetted to see if they're fit to live freely.

Why not?

But I see how an automatic get-out-of-jail-free card system can be abused. But not terribly abused.

Everyone deserves a second chance. Especially since the sentance was given by one single dude, who deliberated over it for a day to a week-max. Kind of rediculous when I look at it from that angle.

To hell with that! I almost got caught up in another societel illusion: Prisons are useless. I say get rid of them, and start taking care of those who choose a criminal lifestyle. They're the most afflicted by society's adnormalities. They don't commit crimes just because.

I say free Ronnie Biggs!

if they did the crime then they should serve the sentance it came with whatever the age they would be when they were released.
I don't believe in early release etc i think if you've been given 15 years (or however many years) thats what you should do.

I say let him rot, He did a crime, and commited another one by escaping and he's admitted he doesnt regret doing either!

do the crime , do your time.
keep em locked up xxx

it doesnt matter. you did it. go to jail. he woulda been out by now if it wasnt for him running. and besides, if you take away prisons, i'll go rob a bank, cause what do i have to fear then. geez, its punishment. being a psychiatrist you should know how important risk/reward and consequences are to people. just because everyone picks one thing doesnt mean you have to go against it. being the expert on minds i am it seems like you want attention because you always go against what the majority say. which is a sign you were never treated well as a child. just go with whats right. not what everyone else says is wrong

Oh, lovely, ad hom.

I was treated pretty well as a child. And I just love how you assume I'm "going against the crowd" or something for the hell of it.
This is an opinion. And in my world-view, most of what the majority has to say on a sociological level is pure horseshit anyway.

Am I not granted to right to think you're all doing it arse-ways?

Now. As for the psychology thing. Reward-Punishment. Doesn't really float with me. I'm by no means a supporter of this new age bs.
There's a higher moral inside of people. I believe that has been taken from us all. And my plan is to help people find that. Not simply throw them in some kind of prison.

Are my ideas really that alien or sick? You make some heavy observations about my life and personality. I hope you can find more solid reasons to believe this.
