Hacking as they are doing programming is an no no. 😛 But it's your choice. As long as you have the numbers to do this event

Its more of an event building something in a short period of time. Facebook does a lot of hackathons. The Like button was invented during a hackathon. Some hackathons can teach people to code under pressure. 24 hours non stop coding and finish products are launched and added as a feature to the site. Google TV also had a hackathon. The air mouse was developed during that hackathon. Was doing some research on hackathons, you know, what it is and how it works. Hackathons aren't that bad. Many tech companies do hackathons to build new products/features/projects. Feel free to vote if you think 'Geek' should do hackathons or not.

No. Why would people participate in yours when they can participate in bigger ones like Facebook's?

I mean, I'm sure if you made it a little simpler than other platforms and it was free and you included some type of reward, people would do it to get some practice in.

Well, it's away to get an site active and more traffic if it goes well. Yet again got to offer more then what others offer.

Put FB does allot so maybe do it more on FB then on the site...

Could be an interesting local event, although it would probably be best as an in person thing rather than a virtual thing.

As @Azareal said, it would be better to do them in 'Person' rather than 'Virtually'. These types of Events, including Hackathons were meant to be done 'In-Person'. When I say that, I really just mean 'Get out of your house, meet-up with others and start bashing your keyboard'.

You will of course, need to find a building to do this in. This is where things will get costly. Getting a building for a Hackathon is not cheep and the same goes for other Events like Conventions. They get the building, have it for a few days and then pay the expensive bill.

Another factor you should think about is your User-Base. I'm assuming that Geek doesn't have any users or has a few at the moment. You're going to need at least a minimum of around 7000 - 10,000+ users on your site and they'll of course need to be active a lot. When I say a lot, I don't mean visit, post then hide in the shadows. I mean users that are constantly online and don't stay away for more than a month.

One last thing about your Hackathon. They're meant for Programmers to come up with new Ideas and Creations. Your User-Base might be home to Non-Programmers and Newbie-Programmers. Hackathons are a good way to brush up on skills but if you're users don't know a lot about Programming then it's best to conduct a poll and see what get's the most results. If a lot say no then forget about it.

I suggest that you do not do a Hackathon.

For starters, you only have 5 Users. That's extremely tiny and it's really not enough to do a Community-Hackathon. If you want to do a Hackathon then you need more than 5 Users.

Secondly, a Building to do the Hackathon in. Of course, you don't have the Money to pay for a Building to do this Event in. Buildings for things like Hackathons and Conventions get extremely expensive(Well over £3000 - £7000+). And since you don't have that amount of Money, you can't do it. A Hackathon is meant to be done In-Person and not over the Internet.

So, just scrap that Idea. You're not going to be able to do a Hackathon. It's pretty much impossible for you to do as it will involve a lot of Organizing, Planning and Money

i have done GeekFest at least 2-3 times so far. And I am not having an issues with it. So it's quite successful.
