Hunter Biden was ready to plead guilty if he got a plea deal, but that fell through so now he's pleading not guilty to tax evasion. Should he serve jail time if found guilty?

I don't think it'll happen. Not when his dad is the president.

Isn't it a shame though? I mean, weren't people complaining that the rich don't pay their fair share and now this happens when some rich guy isn't paying???

It's a big disappointment that mega millionaire politicians can break the law and walk away without any consequences from the law. It goes to show that money talks. If you've got money, you've got friends.

Politicians definitely take care of their own and their families.

My husband got a speeding ticket when he was in college, and his uncle was a local politician. The ticket got taken care of. Good for my husband, but wow, how is that fair?

Hunter must feel so bad that his personal issues have been weaponized by the Right to use as a cudgel against his father. As someone that has struggled with addiction, the sense of familial shame that stems from it is one of the worst parts.

It's disgusting behaviour from these unhinged politicians and commentators. He's a private citizen who has already dealt with more tragedy than most of us, and now his biggest personal flaws are at the centre of a political fucking circus.

How does that relate to someone not paying taxes?

As much as I feel many would love to see him serve time for the crime he has committed, it is true that because of who his father is, he will more than likely get away with it and not serve the time whilst others in the country end up having to serve jail time for something like that.

It's a shame that because you are the leader of the country, you are able to do something like that for your family, I firmly believe that should be something that is prevented.

He seems to have done numerous independent activities that would each put a standard citizen in jail or at least face some level of punishment for any given one. Granted it is very hard to tell what is true and what is political in this case. I highly doubt he will serve jail time, but less due to the family situation and more to do with the charges being mostly failure to pay taxes instead of true tax evasion. Two years of missed taxes don't seem to generate a huge punishment as a norm. Snipes was found to have accountants and other staff paid to avoid paying his taxes and then refused to pay the bill once it was discovered, so that is much more evasion than simply missing his return if I'm not mistaken, but I'm not too informed about his trial. That could be the route Hunter took as well, but I have a feeling they will push his drug use and simply missed the returns and it will be up to the court to find otherwise. Although with the list of other issues, including firearm crimes, if he gets ZERO punishment at all, then it would be hard to deny family was involved.

Both Biden and Trump and Biden's son are highly corrupt. Obviously, they think they are above the law. Well, if ordinary people do this, they don't get away with it as much. I mean, do any rock stars go to jail for drug possession? Do they get as much time as average people?

Why we have to have two OLD farts running the damn country

Because it's really not about them...but about the two party system. If we could convince the US voters to move away from the two party system, we might get some of the old guys out. We need younger politicians to get voted into office. The problem is that once they get into this two party system, they can't do what they want, only what the party wants.

A little off-topic but doesn't that make a mockery of the justice system? I personally know someone who copped a plea deal in the U.S. for 6 months in an open prison not because they were guilty of any crime but because they were facing a life sentence if found guilty in a trial by jury.

We are starting to see this occur more in the UK and it's coincided with an increase in cases where there has been a clear miscarriage of justice among young offenders.
