I have a .com domain, and a competitior has the .net version of it. His .net site ranks as one of the 1st Google results, and mine does not. Mine isn't even indexed.

He's offering to trade his .net domain + cash for my .com domain, because he obviously knows that .com is better. Should I go for it? When I look at the pros, I'm getting cash and a .net domain that ranks 1st on Google for the keyword I want. When I look at the cons, he's getting the .com version of the name.

Would it be a smart move to accept his offer? Or a dumb move?

It seems like this guy knows how to get to the top, so even if you get the .net, odds are he'll bring the .com to the top.

I was thinking the same. His content, SEO, etc is what's making the .net version go near the top. If you get it, it might go down while he might be able to bring the .com up.

Depends on the domain and how much cash he's offering.

Is your domain parked or in use?

How much money is he offering? If you're using the domain and building your site, I'd keep it. He might have a higher page rank, but yours will go up in time.

No, keep it. Before you know it, he will be above you again, if you don't know SEO. If he can afford to pay extra then it says something. He might be paying for unique traffic, or paying for certain content etc.

Keep your .com and work on it. Before you know it, you will be indexed, and ranked nice and high for your SERP keyword.

I'd agree with other members that you should keep it. If you add quality content and work on your site's SEO you will eventually rank above his site. Plus there will be people who hear about "thesitename.net", but when they type the name into Google they will automatically type in the .com version. .com domains are the best and the work he does to promote his .net will actually also help to promote your dot com.

I'd say you sell him the domain and get a new one, then buy the .com .net .info and .org for that domain. 😎

I'd keep the .com mate! .coms always sound much better than .nets!

He wants it for a reason and it isn't to help you out.

This smells a little funny. I'd keep it. Seems to me you got more than you realised you got, if he wants it that badly.

Thanks for the input, guys. I've decided to stick with it. The keyword I'm aiming for is on the first page of Google, and now his isn't. 🙂

I think you should stay with the .Com as even though his .Net is indexed and at the top, it wont take long to get your .Com to the top as well, and a .Com is better, well people say it is. I personally prefer .Net domains but that's just me.
