I've been thing about making a new forum. Some ideas I have are: mobile gaming or Christian music.

The problem is I've already had a forum called Moba Speak and I closed it after less then a month. I seem to lose interest in most things, and I don't want it to happen again.

Should I make a new one and this time stick with it? I've also thought about just helping out on someone else's forum, but I haven't found any that I'm interested in and that would need my help.

Advice is most welcome. Thanks guys!

I would suggest go out and help someone else.
if you find an interesting niche, then build a new forum based on that niche.

If you think you might lose interest in a forum fast, perhaps helping someone out might be a better idea or finding a co-admin to start a new board with you. They might be able to help you stay motivated.

Yeah, I would like to create a mobile gaming community but then I think about all the time I spend researching the hosting, themes, domains, etc, and then end up closing it after I can't get it just how I want it. Plus not having any help in getting started doesn't help. 🙁

Well I think I already have a domain picked out. Now I just need to decide on the hosting, forum software, and theme.

Right now I'm looking at XenForo, IPB, and Burning Board. I've used Hawk Host for hosting before but is there anyone you would recommend?

After all that it's really just help getting the word out to people and then getting posts on the site going.

if you are good at using the terminal, I would recommend iwstack, they are very reliable. I have a few instances running non stop for over 6 months. if you need a lot of instances, iwstack becomes really cheap.

Sadly I'm not. I probably could get it set up but after that if anything happen I wouldn't know what to do.

Then go with a host you are comfotable with. I have had very bad experiences with shared hosts, so I cannot recommend any.

as for forum software, you could also look at the one which I am building currently https://codoforum.com . Its pretty new though.

if you just need an early push, I could add something about your forum in my PR4 website (only if it is related to web/technology)

have you thought about a niche?

My biggest concern/issue is this:

Not to be too blunt, but you've heard the definition of insanity right? (In case not... Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, all the while expecting different results.)
So if you can't stick with a forum for more than a month or two, and you've done this a few times now, why would this new venture be any different?
Can you honestly say this would be different? I mean you've stated that you lose interest, how are you going to change that so it doesn't happen again? And can you even actually change this?

I think instead of starting a new site and going through the pains (and costs since you've indicated you're self-hosting) to get it up and running that you should just be staff on someone else's site.
At least this way if you get bored you can just thank them for the opportunity to be staff, tell them you need to move on and then quit. This way if you lose interest at least then you aren't abandoning your own forum that is full of people who depend upon you (and you alone) to run it.

As for finding a site to help out on, there are tons of forums that could use staff. The employment centre would be a good place to start. (Post in the seeking employment and you'll get all kinds of offers. Though you may want to just include a list of sites that you're willing to work on and types of sites that you won't even consider. )

But sometimes the best way to help out a site isn't by being staff... Just joining and being active on a site can help out so much more. (I mean having extra activity on a smaller site can help out that site's staff so much. Makes it easier for them to build up activity, motivate members and help build things up.) So maybe just joining a few sites as a member instead would be better off.
