I am making a monthly magazine for Geeks Hut, this months is about to come out, should I make subscriptions free or paid? What are your thoughts, there's going to be at least 20 pages in each issue and spaces for paid advertisements.

depends

if you're a small community make it free..

if you're a large communtiy make it paid

Well, as a blog, it's hard to tell, I was thinking either $10 a year, or $12 a year then $1 an issue, because time and effort goes into it.

Personally Zinc, I'd make it free until you gain a wide reader audience. A wide reader audience will mean you can charge a lot to advertise...

You could just charge $1 for the magazine, it's not much and many people wouldn't mind paying that. However, I would think about making the first magazine free and if you get a good response then start charging for it.

lol don't charge it 1$
you'll make nothing with paypal fees

So the general response is free, for now?

I meant to say $1 for the first magazine, won't be much at all with PayPal fees but you'll at least get an idea of many people will buy your magazine and then adjust the pricing from there.

If you need more subscribers then make it for free and then later after few more release and once you acquired 10k readers you can make it paid.

Okay, here's what you do, it should always be free, there are other ways to make money...

1. Keep it free, make sure you have lot's of good content, advertise and market it a lot...

2. Build your links and get your page rank up...

3. Sell advertising on the blog (With a Page rank 5 - 6 with good amount's of traffic you can sell links at $20 a month) So if you sell 20 link spaces on your blog at $20 a month you make $400 a month...

It's a lot of hard work but it's very much worth it, and it means everyone get's the free content and you can still make your money, it just takes longer...

Thanks,
Damien Green.

You could try a newsletter for now and see how that goes, if you get quite a lot of subscribers then you can launch the magazine and charge for it.

Mailchimp offers free newsletter services for upto 2,000 subcribers and upto 12,000 emails a month. I would aim for 250 or maybe even 500 subscribers before launching the magazine.

If its a blog, then you should use something like adsense, and you can collect money from advertisements on your blog!

Definitely keep it free until you capture a larger audience.

No one would be willing to pay $1 from a site that is relatively desolate. Also, as stated above, PayPal would keep most of that money and you'd barely see any in-come.

He could just have the money sent as a gift and thus no pp fees, couldn't he?

I'd say do free this month, see how readers respond, and if you get a lot of readers with all positive feedback, consider going to $1-3 for future issues.

I'd definitely use Damien's idea. That's the road to success! 😀

I personally don't see the point in making it paid, at least right now. If you made it paid, I could easily see someone just passing it around to their friends, and seeing as how the community you have right now is pretty small, you're losing a good bit of your audience right now. I think free would be the best option for now. Once you start getting a good amount of readers(track your downloads so you know the approx number of readers), I suggest either making an upgraded version, or starting to charge for it. It's a tough transition, so I think you really would be better off just sticking with free all the way 😉

Make it free for the life of the magazine, some benefits in doing so:

1. As others have stated, once you gain a wider audience you can place targeted ads from companies into your magazine, most big companies would pay huge amounts without question for advertisement in wide-read media, such as online magazines just to get their brand seen, even if they pick up no hits, their brand has still been seen and recognized by your readers. It's all about marketing.

2. Get a major sponsor. Getting sponsored is an easy, yet effective way to keep your magazine running and have a little left over for you. Basically one major sponsor will pay a huge amount to have their brand associated with media which is read by lots of people. Works the same way as above. Or you could opt into having a few minor sponsors, and do the same thing that way.

3. Donations. Possibly one of the easiest ways to make money, never underestimate people's generosity for something they love, especially if it's free and always has been. This also leaves you with free time to expand, considering you don't have to contact a sponsor(s) or companies to advertise on your magazine.

4. A premium subscription, in addition to your free edition. Make the premium addition more feature rich, have contests, etc. etc. just something to entice the viewers, basically if they like the free version and want extra content with contests and giveaways then they'll be more than happy to pay the extra few dollars that you charge, mix this with any of the above suggestions and you will find yourself having a worthwhile 'business'.

I read "magazine" and went "obsolete waste of money".

No one will pay for physical media in the form of a magazine if you're small. Sorry man. Internet ruined your magazine.

Unless you can provide some killer content (and by killer I mean the best possible), give it for free. You can earn money from ad revenue, as the site gets bigger and more active 😉
