Should I Switch SMF To PhpBB?

Lol, it's line one post - SMF one post - PhpBB one after another 😛...But you guys make great points..I guess though..I will stick with SMF.
Thanks a lot guys 🙂

I hate both of them. MyBB for the win, really. The ACP layout of it is great, MODs are easy to install. There is a great selection of free themes, and they are very easy to customise. I'm moving my Zeta forum to it right now.

phpBB3's ACP layout just puts me off it. MODs are a pain to install. The attitude the people have in the Community forum is so self righteous: ''We made the code, we get to decide what is in the code''. Have you seen the community rules?

SMF is better than phpBB3, but the ACP layout just fails to win me over. I like the way you an quickly and easily install packages with it, but all the same MyBB's layout is much more appealing to me. Really, its VB but without all of the clutter.

Now if you can afford it, go for IPB. VB's cluttered ACP is a turn off for me. Sure it gives you much more control over your forum, but if you want that much control over your users, you need to see a psychiatrist. The IPB profile is very nicely laid out with a comments bar. All in all it seems pretty cool

The ACP is pretty kicass too. It's nice and neat, surprisingly uncluttered by the amount of features it has. Also, it does not have the amount of meaningless junk VB's ACP has. VB has a way more features than IPB, but most of them are gimmicks, and never will be used except by a few people. In the interest of saving space, those should just be available as plugins for those who need them.

I've given you my €0.02 on the issue. Free software: MyBB. Paid: IPB. Good luck!

And another thing. The amount of spam i got in a day was stupid!
All softwares get spammed... Even SMF (even though their die hard lovers hate to admit it). It is a fact of life. There are loads of phpBB3 forums out their using the dafault anti spam protection so of course spammers are going to target the software. All it takes is one mod and you can stop it. The same applies for all software. There are alot of SMF forums out there so of course SMF's CAPTCHA is going to be targeted and broken. All it takes again is a mod to fix it.

Don't forget in the next release of phpBB3 (ver. 3.0.6) there is going to be a plugin system for CAPTCHA's so it will be alot easier to add custom anti spam things to your registration field.

My co admin had major problems trying to install the anti spam mod on PHPBBs. SMF installtion was simple and fast, had no problems

Again, my main gripe with SMF is the layout. It really is a lot easier to MOD than phpBB3, but the layout of the ACP is horrendous. People should really try out MyBB, even install a test on free hosting.

@Fenrir
Well it really comes down to how much you know for those types of things. Installing MODs on software you're not used to is always a pain the first dozen times or so, but after awhile it gets better. I could probably install some of the more advanced MODs for phpBB in less time then simple MODs for SMF (even if it's 3 click install) because my mind would need to work out how it's done, where i'm already good to go with phpBB.

It depends what mod he was trying to install and if he installed it right. We have 2 different anti spam mods here and both installed with no problems and stops most spam apart from the odd 1 or 2 spammers that seem to be human, based on what they post and the way that act.
