I think if you don't know how to make themes yourself then it might be worth it to spend 30 dollars or more on a premium paid theme which goes well for your site until you know how to make nice looking themes yourself, so you can spend more time on promoting your site, and posting content which can increase traffic to your site.

Some premium themes and mods for forums, blogs, and websites can save a lot of time when it comes to designing, and modifying a site to make people spend more time on the site because of a nicer theme/template and mods which may increase the chances of selling a paid membership, donations, and other sales. It also might help with Ad Clicks from returning and new visitor.

A lot of themes which are paid theme also are updated more often when SEO changes, and web browser technologies like CSS, HTML, Javascript, php, etc improves to keep up with web technology, and the updates for the theme are usually free for life once you bought it.

Some premium themes also seem to load faster then many free themes where the images, and php files are not optimized for speed by reducing the file size, or writing cleaner code in .php and .html files.

Its not 100% necessary. But having a premium/custom theme is an added advantage over your competitors.

But instead of getting a premium theme you can save up some more cash and get a custom design. Because premium themes will be used by many forums and they are not unique as custom designs.

Indeed, custom designs are best. There might be some premium themes and mods which make it easier for you to change the colors, and images easier because they might come with instructions or built-in visual editors for doing custom designs.

I know that WordPress Premium themes like Headway, Thesis, Genesis with Child themes which let you easily change colors and pictures with its drag and drop interface or wizard.

I think fewer forums will use premium themes compared to free themes which probably more people use.

If you do some searching you can probably find the premium themes you desire for free on forums that share premium themes. I've done it before, right now I'm using a free theme for my forum that I customized because I really liked it.

I rather just get a custom theme, I have never really seen the point of "premium" themes. Sure they aren't as widely used as free themes, but they still don't make your site unique. Your custom site design will be one of a kind.

There are some premium themes which allow you to easily customize your design with a visual editor like the Headway theme which has a visual editor, and is also optimized for search engines. But, you still have to design the header images and other images yourself to upload to your theme.
