Do you think public schools should have longer hours for children? Why or why not?

Each state in the US has different requirements but the average according to Google is 6.64 hours per day that students are in public school. That was from 2007-08 though but I don't think it's changed much from that.

I personally don't think the hours should increase. I used to be a substitute teacher and the kids were ready to go home by the last period of the day. I mostly taught High School students (aka babysat) and I remember seeing some news article years ago that teenagers would do better if they started school later than the younger students instead of earlier like most schools have it set. I agree with that entirely!

If we want students to learn more about their topics, then their teachers should probably stick to teaching the actual subjects and not try to inject their political, religious or social issue beliefs on the students. I have teacher friends and a high school math teacher bragged how she took a day to explain something to her students...like each period got to hear her schpeel. That's not math. No wonder students in the US are falling behind.

I think the US should adopt the Japanese school system which is 210 days of school. I strongly feel that there's too much time off and schools in the US are extremely lacking. I think they should increase the time and have the kids stay in longer and get less holiday time off. Kids have a hard enough time learning the subject matters. So I think longer hours would help them benefit with tutoring classes on math and English. Perhaps 12 hour long days.

As for holidays, the time on those need to be cut down. 2 and half weeks off for Christmas is ridiculous when you have to work and no one really willing to step in and watch your kids. Day care not being an option for several. I think kids should just get the holiday off and that's it. I also think schools should be more selective with holidays. I've always felt the school system catered to stay home parents and punished the working parent.

Not longer hours as that can cause burnout at any age. I was going to suggest as well the Japanese way of going to school more often.
When I was in school, we had 2 weeks off for Christmas but then it slowly went to just 1 week.
But honestly, I think the better way is to homeschool. Public schools can be biased. I feel kids gain more knowledge as it's catered to them as individuals. Can always do playdates for the social aspect.

Homeschooling is the definition of bias.

Honestly, I’m a proponent for year round schooling. More frequent smaller breaks for kids would help combat summer slides and burnout all around. Schools could offer day camps for those who want to keep working and for kids who need a place to go.

I’m also a proponent for slightly longer days for teachers that run M-Thursday. Give kids and teachers an actual break on the weekends. Research shows that letting kids sleep in later also boosts academic performance.

Kids in the U.S. already spend more hours in school per year than kids in most other countries. I would say that increasing that amount is a bad idea. How those hours are distributed, like @Matthew said, is certainly something that could be changed for the better.

I don't think they should have longer hours necessarily and you can't blame kids for wanting a break, but with everything happening in the world with people getting sick and so forth (covid) I can only imagine how behind the school system is. I only hope the pandemic ends and it doesn't render a lack of education for children.

People don't realize that when you leave school and go onto college or university you tend to spend far more hours anyway. From getting there at 8 am to start at 9 am or whenever till 5 pm or later.

So High school kids start at 1am and then work till 4pm then do homework when they get back home for two hours or more then back to school and no playtime in the real world. The time they are 30 and at work, they just have no life. I rather travel around the world and learn far more than you would at school.

They should not have longer hours as the world has moved on from where people need to rely on school to sustain themselves upon graduation. It is better to allow them have some free time to relax and learn some skills that would help them In the future.

Longer hour for school children is not advisable to avoid overloading. There is limits of stress level to what the brain of children could take. Children learn easily through play way methods of teaching. It is good to allow them a good hour of play during break period to allow their brain to rest.
