Would you think age limits on cell phones prevent Smartphone related social problems like smartphone cyberbullying via Text, prank/troll calling, kids sending naked pictures of themselves, and others with or without other permission via text message, and apps?

I'm not sure age limits will prevent teens from using mobiles to cyber bully others with smartphones since they just buy mobiles online, and secretly use them.

I think there should be an age limit on smartphones but it should be something like at the age of 10 you are permitted to have possession of a full time smartphone. However if you are younger than 10 and just want to play games on your parent's smartphone you should be allowed to do so. If you are under the age of 10 you should be allowed a normal phone the ones that cost about £10 ($17-$20) that are only capable of making calls and playing a few games such as snake. 🙂

I agree kids under the age should not have full smartphones, and it would be better if they have basic phones which can only make calls, text, play games, and have no cameras since there are always a few stories of young kids in the news who complain that a kid sent sexy pictures of themselves, or friends and latter regretted it because they got shamed, or in trouble with the law.

I would say a definite no. This should be the parent's choice, not mandated by law. I'm not too sure why today's knee jerk reaction to everything is to ban it or regulate it. What's next the SEA (Smartphone Enforcement Agency)?

haha. so damn right! 🙂)

Kind of have to agree with pod.

It is up to the parents whether to buy their kids a smartphone or not, and what those kids do with their phones is on their conscious. True, there has been an increase of illegal activity on smartphones, such as teens sending nude photography of themselves, bullying other kids, even purchasing illegal substances, but we can't stop ALL of them. The parents should deal with their own kids and see whether their ready for a smartphone or not. Just my two cents.

When I have kids, they're not getting a phone until they hit high school. Even then, they will still start off with a basic phone. I'm not trying to be mean or cheap, but I think that kids need to learn that it's a privilege to own a phone and you need to earn it. I don't understand why so many parents out there spoil their kids by giving them an iPhone to use when they're only 5. That's just my take on it.

Yes, 18.

School age kids just use it as a distraction.

I don't agree with this. Just because parents and teachers can't disapline certain individuals doesn't mean there should be some law dictating the minimum age to use/own a smartphone.

You're not seeing my point.

All throughout school I had certain people in my class who would distract everyone else because they had the 'latest and greatest'. Those kids caused the rest of us to fail.

That's my point. They are a distraction

However if teachers learned to discipline those individuals there wouldn't be a problem. I remember at my previous school, if someone had their phone out, even if it was off then it would be confiscated for the remainder of the day. There was only one occasion someone was using a phone whilst in class for the duration I was there.

13 for any phone with internet and 16 for smart phone. Phones for calling should be reserved for 12 and under.

And is this law or school policy?.

I see. Then the law should be changed or if smartphones can't be confiscated teachers could encourage positive use of them to enhance learning. Content complementing the lesson could be linked too and utilised.

Also you didn't answer this:

I remember in high school, teachers would take students cell phones & beepers.

Now I'm not sure if their allowed?

I always find it strange when I see a grade schooler with a cell phone. But if the parents thing they should have one then blame the parents.
