Do you think vBulletin should make a come back? Not that it's dead or anything but there isn't much support out there for add ons or modifications. I miss the look of it though!
No it shouldn’t. Internet Brands killed it. There are not many addons for it because they made the addon process very difficult and next to impossible with vB5.
If it did. IB should sell it to someone who actually cares and wants for it to compete and be somewhat successful, a complete rewrite from scratch would be nice to see and maybe even re-release the new version as simply just "vBulletin" as in "vBulletin 1.0"
I do not see it making a come back at all due to the damage they have done. The developer that made vBulletin have moved on to other projects and I’m not saying that the ones there couldn’t do it but the feel would not be there. I mean the 3.8 days are long gone and have been surpassed by current software like IPB and Xenforo even free ones like phpBB and smf feel far advance compared to 3.8. I remember when if your forum wasn’t vBulletin 3.8 you were not a serious forum owner.
It would be cool to see vB trying to do something else, but it probably wouldn't make sense to. IB has a terrible reputation for buying vB and killing it. All of the former vB folks have slowly transitioned over to XF and IPB over the last decade. It would take a miracle for IB to flip the switch for vB and convince all these people to flock back. Even if they completely rewrote vB and it was amazing, I don't think we'd give them a chance.
vbulletin was great software back in the day and if they ever do come back then well and good 🙂 However, they are outdated and slow going to get updates. They do need a revisit. Be cool to have a group of people take back the project and make it better than before and offer what others do not offer to get back into the game.
But it is hard to get back, addons are slow if any, Community is so lacking even before the closer.
I didn't even know any of the events you're all talking about in here had even happened. Regardless of what the reason for their downfall is though, what would any forum software even be able to do to bring back any owner that left them for another platform that catered better to their needs? I feel like in most cases it would be like how once people started leaving Myspace, very little was going to bring them back because they've settled elsewhere and that new place isn't persuading them to leave.
vBulletin was once the most popular commercial forum platform in the world by some margin. Everything changed when Jelsoft sold the product to Internet Brands. The result is well documented and can be searched for.
In short the current product, vBulletin 5 is based on refactored code that is many years old and contains literally hundreds of bugs. There's also virtually no 3rd party support because of various changes that occured to the database structure and in other areas of the code.
In recent times the owners, Internet Brands have shown no interest in the product and the development staff has dwindled to one or two. There's no indication of anything that would amount to a major upgrade so I'd say at this point in time the product is almost dead.
vBulletin won't come back anyway, the more we talk about and the more we discuss the software the more that we get bored and move on. Unless there is a single or a group of people that are willing to take on the role job again and bring it alive, won't happen. Plus on that note, they have to get permission or buy the software from them to be allowed to retake it again.
