Shoutboxes.

Are shoutboxes on forums a thing of the past? Are they even necessary?

I never liked using them on my forums because if members wanted to talk they could use the forums! Or PM each other. But these days I don't really come across forums with shoutboxes on them.

Shout-boxes were neat for a short time, but after a while it stole posts from the forum and oh god the notification sounds. Also they slowed forums down quite a bit.

That was my main problem with them. They took away from the forums.

I don't see the point of them myself, especially when some forums have a "chat thread". Also, Discord's slowly taking over too.

Yeah, but not to the point it has fully taken over forums and shoutboxes - yet.

Almost. Forums are dying. You're lucky if you have an active one.

they where used allot 5 or more so years ago as it was an thing back then but after some time people and even owners start to be aware of how it affects the forum and slowly they died it off to the point that it's not support anymore other then outdated plugins. There are still forums that has them but hard to spot
