Often, I will surf signature links from one forum to the next to find fun new forums to join. But, sometimes the signature links lead to dead forums that are inactive or expired domain names. And, I'm wondering what about all the other forum signature links or backlinks that person put out there on the internet to advertise their site. There could literally be hundreds of broken links pointing back to an expired domain.
From the point of view of the forum owner who no longer has that domain, it means wasted time. For the person clicking on the link, it's just an annoyance. But, as an investor, it could be worthwhile to see if that expired domain is available for purchase, especially if the domain was linked to heavily.
Re: Signature links that lead to dead forums or expired doma
If I ever close a forum or end a project I normally go through and remove my signature links and replace it with new ones but I have been led to a couple of dead / inactive forums through links, it is pretty annoying, especially when it's something you probably would have been interested in joining.
Re: Signature links that lead to dead forums or expired doma
I agree. It is pretty annoying. Whenever I change my sites I try to change all of my signatures but sometimes I miss a few forums here and there because I am a member of so many.
Though, if I miss them then I guess that could mean I'm not active on those forums....at least not at that point in time.
Now that I am down to one website though (at one point in time I had almost 8) I don't see that happening much anymore.
Re: Signature links that lead to dead forums or expired doma
I usually update my signatures to remove any forums/sites I shut down, so it's not really an issue for me.
As for other people's links on my own sites... yeah, that can be a problem. Maybe I should go through the member list and start checking what links work and what don't, before editing out the latter.
Re: Signature links that lead to dead forums or expired doma
I usually try to update my signatures if links are dead. If my sites are no longer online, and if I had bought some signature space I would inform each member that my site is no longer up and to kindly remove the link. While looking for more promotional forums I came across a few dead links and was disappointed that the forums were no longer up.
