Have you ever had much, if any success with signature links? Personally, I really haven't. I've tried to join other forums and get involved in them. However, in my opinion, it just makes your profile look spammy if you're the only person with signature links. How about you, have you had any luck with signature links to promote?

I think signature links are the best source of advertising on another forum. You can use them without being spammy. A single link or a well-designed promotion image (maybe even one that looks like a personal sig graphic) can be just as eye-catching if not more.

Going to a forum with a similar niche as your own and putting a link to your forum/site in your signature there while being an active/contributing member is a great idea. Even if that forum doesn't have a "plug your board" section - which a lot of non-promotion/admin forums don't. It's worth it, in my experience.

I think signature links are good ways to build a brand. If you stay active on a lot of forums and have a banner link to your own, then people will eventually see it and when they see it a lot, they will be interested to check out your forum. This means it may not instantly send traffic to your forum but it will in the long term if you have enough signature links that are seen regularly.

On top of that, you will need something unique or attractive in order to get others to join your forum.

I've had a little luck with users vising my forum by clicking on the signature link, but I don't think many people click on signature banners/links anymore.

This is what I think it's really about: brand recognition. People like jumping on the bandwagon, and the more popular they think your forum is, the better. If you have a really professionally designed banner, you can really give an excellent first impression.

Yes, I have had luck with signature links. It's a wonderful way to build decent backlinks if done correctly.

Honestly. No I never had any luck with them. I'm sure other people have... But I guess every little bit counts.

What's important to realize with this, I think, is that no one will join your forum just because they saw a link. you have to build your own personal reputation on a forum before people will care about the forum you link to. Once people start liking you, some of them will start liking your site. Until that happens, signature links don't have much of a point.

Well, sometimes, I click on random links I see in sig's. 😀

If no one else is posting their links in their signature then I probably won't do it however, if others do and it's allowed then I definitely include a link in my signature. I try to post other things in my signature to catch people's eyes e.g. funny or inspirational quotes. I find that people get curious about what you're up to if they can relate to you or if you've helped them out in some way.

I wish there was a way to track the source of visitors when they click a link to your forum. On my blog it shows me where traffic comes from so it's really cool to see those stats.

I don't think they provide much exposure really. I've tried it myself, and I doubt I even got a member or two. Plus you need to be an active poster to spread the link, and that could be a sort of big commitment. 😛

I believe it cannot hurt. Whenever it's available option, I include signature link. But I don't like to put a lot of text inside.
