Signature Rules

I have the following as my signature rules on a forum that I own:

1) Personal banners and signature areas (in the event of text) should, whenever possible, be kept under the size of 650x300 (width: 650 pixels, height: 300 pixels). Please follow this guideline and consider those with a smaller screen resolution when adding an image to your signature. Should the size of the signature exceed that, you might be asked to change or remove it.

2) Logical size of the signature should not exceed 300KB.
3) When signing your post, please don't do it as a link, you have plenty of space in your signature area and in your profile for links.

Currently, members can have up to five links in their signatures but the text size of links cannot be increased. They're allowed one image no taller than 100px and it's not allowed to stretch the forum.

There is a size limit of 500x200, and you can only have one image in the sig.

I allow non-commercial signature links. I allow some commercial signature links but they must DIRECTLY relate to the niche. However, signature links are only shown to registered and logged in members. My forums are NOT promotion forums, so joining for a signature back link (which isn't always a positive thing concerning SEO) is simply a waste of time for those that do it on my forums.

As for competitive links (links to other forums like mine), I tell them that I allow it as long as I can do the same on their forum - that is fair.

I don't have rules specifically for signatures... (I probably should add a bit about that really.) Though I do have other rules which impact them. Basically:
- you can advertise your site in your signature.
- no cloaked links (so no using bit.ly or whatever to hide where your link is going).
- keep your signature PG-13.

I just have a common sense rule. If someone has a huge signature, I'd ask them to remove it. On large forums, you should always have a signature rule, but a new forum probably doesn't need them. If your members don't have the common sense to not have a 400-pixel image in their signature, there are bigger issues than their signature. 😛

The rules on my forum advise members to avoid:

- Excessively large signatures,
- signatures with obscene content,
- overly distracting signatures

...We hardly ever have to enforce these guidelines, most people have common sense when it comes to their signature.

That's easy to follow, not like some other forum. Even wanna post a reply must be accepted by admin! 😀
