Signature Space

How useful is signature space on forums for buying other links into it? I've seen on FP for instance that it's going quite well with paypal and FP cash. But can search engines actually use it? What use is it?

I know that backlinks have a meaning but it depends on where the backlinks are. Though I may be wrong, I've been told that the more you have the better. But it's the quality of the backlinks that matters over the quantity.

I would assume that an image that links to a website or forum might count as a backlink, but I don't know this for sure.

I find people use banners too much in signatures.

Banners tend to be for advertising purposes. Links tend to be for SEO/SERPs purposes, ie. ranking in search engines.

Text Anchor Links are the most useful imo. Mainly for SEO and PR though.

For example you have a forum called thebestgamingforum.com

You can make a anchor link called Gaming Forum,Best Gaming Forum, and Game Forum.
