Why are site maps good for promotion? I mean, it's only a list of a few things that are on your site or forum. Do you need to link the site map on the site somewhere or do bots just find them?

Site Maps are not good from promotion. They just give search engines a list of the content of the site so they can index things better and so they don't miss anything. You can submit sitemaps directly to search engines like if you have Google webmaster tools.

Like Fowler said. Honestly, you're just wasting your time just adding a sitemap.

Actually, they help search engines index your site. It's more useful than a promotion forum.

It's nearly impossible to compare the two. A sitemap is a tool, a promotion community is a source of information. As all tools, it can be helpful to any site, and are encouraged by most webmasters. They allow you to make yourself more visible to search engines, which means more traffic. A promotion forum in general is not to make you get traffic, if you believe this then every site you create will fail. Don't rely on promotion forums for traffic, rely on them as a community of potential knowledge. Only by putting in the effort to learn from what others find successful can you help yourself.
