Want to see your links featured in Google's new AI Overviews that appear in search results? A recent report indicates that achieving high organic rankings in Google Search significantly boosts your chances. According to Mark Traphagen from seoClarity, data shows that over 99% of links in AI Overviews originate from the top ten organic search results.

Traphagen shared on LinkedIn, "An impressive 99.5% of the time, one or more of the top 10 web results were included in the AI Overview's sources!" This insight comes after analyzing 36,000 keywords and comparing URLs appearing in AI Overviews with those in the top 10 organic results.

Initially, Google had informed us that the AI Overviews, previously known as Search Generative Experience, would feature content from well-ranked sites. However, as Traphagen pointed out, this wasn't always the case early on. Many users criticized the quality of those early AI Overviews, as there was little correlation between top-ranking sites and the AI-generated content.

Mark speculated that Google has started integrating traditional ranking factors into AI Overviews in response to widespread criticism regarding their accuracy. I agree with this observation.

So, if you want your links to be included in AI Overviews, focusing on improving your organic search rankings is key.

Here is one example but there are many:

Google Ai Overviews Seo

But Glenn Gabe said he has been watching this and said he does not see it in his data. "I'm not seeing this based on tracking AI overviews for a number of companies. As an extreme example, there's one company I'm tracking AIOs for that ranks in the top 10 for 71% of the queries tracked, and even has some featured snippets, yet doesn't have one citation in any of the AI overviews," Glenn Gabe wrote on X.

I do see more AI being used, even a simple google search for a question that answers you. Even some small sites do get results.

Now we have another source of search traffic with Chatgpt implementing their search engine!😉

This raises questions about whether AI Overviews are simply mirroring existing search results or if they have their independent ranking factors.
If you’re ranking well on regular search, you’re more inclined to rank well on AI overviews as well.

I think AI overview is mainly a compilation from the top search results.
