Do you think forum owners should possess some kind of special skills and/or characteristics to be effective community leaders?

What skills should they have?

What skills would you recommend new forum owners master?

I like this question and I'm sure I'll think of more things to add once I've done typing up my response.

Here are characteristics of a good site owner/admin that benefit a site:

  • Knows Permissions - Permissions are so frustrating, need I say more?
  • Can be Objective - Think of the owner/admin as a judge when it comes to reports. He/she has to be able to step out of his own ideals and see the other side of things, keeping his own rules in mind. Does the reported post violated the rules? It shouldn't be, I can't stand this guy so bam.
  • Is Honest - No one likes dealing with a liar
  • Is likeable - this is for the younger forums because having an owner/admin around that people like is important because they'll keep coming back to hang out. If they can't stand the guy/girl, they won't return.
  • Contributes to the forum - A Ghost doesn't help. Members want to see the owner/admin around because they know that he/she truly cares and isn't just using the forum to make money off advertising.
  • Knows the software - I guess this should have been up there along with permissions but knowing how to use the forum platform is a must

I think forum owners should have some knowledge of the niche they are running. They should also be active & engage the members. If there’s a lull, new topics should be started to encourage more discussion.

Mine is a free Proboards which is quite user-friendly for people like me who don’t have tech skills. However, owners should also listen to their members & what they would like to make their visit more enjoyable.

I don't think you need many skills. Just the practical knowhow to keep discussion civil and be friendly. There's not much else too it I don't think personally.

I think forum owners should not only be proficient in the chosen niche (so that he/she can create content) but also on the technical side so that he/she can set up the forum.
