Do you offer a sliding scale for your graphics services, based upon the financials of a client? Or based on the level of their website, whether it's for hobby or business?

If you're the client, would you prefer that a designer does a sliding scale based on what you can afford for your site?

I wouldn't do that because it can come back to bite you, also known as 'no good deed goes unpunished'.

I did a job at a cut-price rate but due to word of mouth I had a lot of people wanting my services all expecting the same rate. It caused a degree of bad feeling.

Yeah, you have to be very careful with that. Once you establish a price point, you should stick to it and only deviate in very rare cases or people will all expect a discount all the time.

Lots of businesses practice this type of thing. They’ll have their standard pricing, then they’ll have a separate business with more affordable pricing. They just make sure nothing connects the two businesses publicly.
