I was thinking about using SMF for the upcoming ForumAdvertiser.com remake. I feel very comfortable with this software and have over a year's worth of experience with it. No, I wouldn't be using any crap/ugly/unprofessional themes. I'll be using a high-end professional premium skin for it.

One thing that worries me though, is that it'd be difficult to bring in all the hardcore phpBB fans, seeing as FP's population is composed by a majority of them. There are also several "SMF haters" here which worries me further. If you're an SMF hater, would it be an automatic turn-off for you if ForumAdvertiser.com was powered by SMF?

Please give your opinion(s).

Thanks.

Whatever software you feel comfortable using, that's what you should go for.

I don't like SMF and it's not great to look at... IPB or phpBB are better but I guess it's your forum at the end of the day. Choose what you work best with 😛

I would use SMF. It a good Ad Management Mod. I'll give you a link later.

Use what you want. If someone isn't going to join the forum due to the software that is their loss. As any forum software can be made to look great.

If you can afford it go for VB, if not go with whatever you feel comfortable. 🙂

Good luck!

If it's on SMF, would that automatically throw you away from joining?

No worries, I know all the best SMF mods out there. 😛

That's quite what I'm worried about though. It's kind of my loss too. I want to try and gain as many members as possible.

Thanks for all your input guys.

It wouldn't stop me from joining, but SMF is just boring in my opinion. The way its displayed, its boxy.

It wouldn't turn me away. I don't really care about forum hosts as long as they aren't slow and annoying.

Go for a new theme. Actually, SMF is very good (but I thought you bought a vBulletin already). As I said earlier, the package manager is the one feature which makes it better than phpBB.

It's all up to you at the end. I realize that you are genuinely trying something different, and that's absolutely fine, but you don't have to leave SMF for it to be different.

If the forum becomes active then no, but I don't like SMF really... though your alternative is vB which I also don't like

Same here. I'm not picky about what software a forum is on. I'm not a big fan of SMF myself, but I'm not totally against it, either. I'll join any forum about on any software, even PHPBB2! So, at the end of the day, I'm not picky. I just look at the friendliness of the community, how quickly and accurately the services are completed, and the content. So the software, nor the skin, would throw me off.

Its not a remake, its a different forum that happens to share the same name. 😛

Anyways, SMF is fine but I'd prefer phpbb or vB.
