I am currently creating a forum using SMF software. I actually like it a lot, because as the name says, it's simple. What do you think about it?

Ive never actually used it myself. Im currently liking the new features though and might start using it at some point.

Honestly, I don't like SMF. The templates aren't good.

There are 10,000+ custom ones, and not to mention all the phpBB3, phpBB2, Invision, Zeta, and Plus converted skins. Are you daft? The templates stretch further than phpBB3, if you ask me. The only issue is finding a right version. I have used SMF long enough to know about the templates, a little bit more.

I highly recommend it. All you need to do, is find a decent host, and you will be on your way to an epic forum.

I ran a previous forum on it for a few months. The ACP is very easy to use and its easy to install skins / modifications. However I dont like the user side of it. They could re-do the way you alter your settings, signature, etc and make it a little more user friendly.

True, that's a downfall. Another downfall is the mods. I mean for phpbb3, so easy to find specific ones, but for SMF you have to search a little more.

I find SMF too basic for me. I also don't like the way it is set out. But overall posting with it and mods/skins are easy to work, so a not bad software overall :great:

I don't like it, generally the templates aren't that nice, the default smilies are repulsive, it doesn't have an MCP (at least with version 1.1, I'm pretty sure I read it was being added to SMF 2.0)

It's just generally a very average software IMO.

The Package Manager is one of SMF's signature features. Not only can you install mods directly on a zip, you can even do more with it, such as upgrading versions. It's definitely more user-friendly than 40 minutes worth of file edits. Most of SMF's problems also got fixed in SMF 2.0.

SMF is one of the better free forums, I find. If you are looking for good SMF themes, look for ones by Crip and DzinerStudio. Also, there's someone who also ported some vBulletin 3 styles by KreativFantasy somewhere. Having said all that, Cathy is the problem with SMF. She's the one trying to take all the credit, and is the cause of the downfall.

I personally don't find that. The MOD database on SMF.org is well organized, and the search returns accurate results.

KreativFantasy styles were taken down a while ago, but I still have a few of them.

Shame. This other guy (Turklord) had a perfect vBulletin 3.6 default theme for SMF 1.1.

SMF is currently the only free/open source forum I would use. I am currently using 2.0 RC3 and it's been running smoothly ever since.

I do feel the WYSIWYG editor does need some polishing and I never cared for the way profiles are displayed.
