Im going to be starting a community soon. Usually, I use mybb, but I found a pretty sexy SMF Theme that I want to use. So, what are some must need modifications for SMF? Also, to get the SMF installation correctly, where can I find a good guide that includes files that need to be chmoded and such?

All suggestions are welcome 🙂

What is this forum based on?
Som things you should add is a rep mod, I think it is re-named after Karma, all I can think of considering I don't know what genre your forum is yet.

Will you be using 2.0 rc3 or 1.1?

Either way I gotta suggest -

SA Shop

SA Affiliates

SA Facebook Connect Integration

Aevo Video Site mod

And anything vbgamer45 made.

Shop/Points system is overused and unnecessary, even though SMF Shop is more extensive and complete than any phpBB MOD or a MyBB plugin.

I disagree, I think forum money can never be overused. I use the shop mod, it's great, now if only I had time to set it up right XD

But yeah, forum money is GREAT for any board. Maybe RPGs benefit more from it though than some other genres.

Have you tried SMF's help forum? They have a great bunch of volunteers there, many of them very experienced.

Definitely get the Anti-Spam Verification Questions mod. It reduces the amount of spambots significantly.

Right first off its pretty easy to install SMF, and second i don't want to put you off but installing mods on a custom theme is a pain in the backside.

But i think topic view mods and forum view mods are the best for SMF!

Lol what? installing mods on custom themes is normally very easy. unless it is a highly customized mod. Which then all you gotta do is do the edits yourself. Which is easier then phpbb due to not as many files needing edited.

Most mods though(SA Shop for instance) is just upload, install, done 🙂.

Perhaps they are overused because they are fun. 😛

My point is that a lot of times, it's used just because Forum Promotion uses it here.

Going back on-topic, here are some that you should use for SMF in case of bot attacks. Having said that, SMF has always had a very good record in keeping security problems at a minimum.

Compared to widely acclaimed softwares such as phpBB and quickly expanding softwares such as MyBB, I'm not sure if SMF is the way to go for you, regardless of whether you found a pretty theme, especially since your target audience consists of individuals who know a thing or two about the internet.
