Firts let me say the SMF I am focusing on is rc1.2 since the package installer is a bit buggy, meaning you have to manually install to make sure it works.

Anyways to the topic.

With SMF manual install, i have noticed the instructions are alot more clear then PHPBB. I have also noticed it normally takes less edits to install the mod.

With PHPBB it can take up to an hour or more to get a mod manually installed, not to mention their auto installer isn't to great.

Can someone explain why phpbb is harder to deal with when it comes to mods?

I do have experience with both btw.

So maybe others here can give their thoughts on the matter?

It's because the way they've designed it, although i personally think their starting to make process on Blinky.

It doesn't take an hour to install a mod, well only for newbies, but once you get the hang of it, you'll install mods without needing to re-check your edits 😉.

Well I am probably noob with phpbb 3,but that darn arcade mod took me forever lol.

Agreed with Nathan, it is just the way life is. It will definitely improve in future releases with the way the competition is shaping now. I hated installing phpBB mods.

I actually like installing them though, i mean yeah there's ones that do it automatically for you, but with phpBB you can learn from your mistakes, and it helps with coding, i mean if you want to make something appear somewhere else you gotta do it yourself, where as the other software they do it for you, you just don't learn anything... Oh my mistake, you do learn how to push a couple of buttons 😛.

Sometimes the auto software is good when it comes to big mods, but if your someone like me, you wouldn't mind it 🙂.

Once RC2 gets released (should be in October rumor has it, since all known bugs have been taken care of) the package manager should be more stable. The only thing that isn't perfect with the package manager is you can't manually edit Sources files without a MOD or FTP. Though most of the time it is only a theme edit.

And 2.0 is better than 1.1. In 1.1 most theme edits to index.template.php have to be done manually.

I am having this problem now with mods.
I am helping someone with their forum and I found the mods they wanted for phpbb but the instructions to install them are crazy. I mean why does it take so long? That is crazy. Its funny I have test forums for both the the provider and I'm using SMF 1.1.10 and the phpbb3. I just downloaded the mod for SMF and installed it. It works.

So maybe SMF? but they kinda want phpbb.
what do you think?
Oh and i have a test site for mybb, how hard are their mods, and do you guys like mybb? I did but I didnt use it much.

My BB is pretty simple to use.

Some themes give me problems, but other then that its pretty simple.

@digg how do you know, you have not used phpbb3 by itself. Nor SMF

I have never installed SMF, so I say Phpbb3.

All you have to do is get the AutoMOD and it can edit the files and all of that for you easy. It only takes about half a second.

I think I've tried both and Phpbb seems simpler to me. That's just me though.

What's the story then about installing phpbb mods on non-prosilver and subsilver mods? I've had difficulty with that on phpbb 3.0.5. (They seemingly have no support for this on FAQ's and mod instructions on the main phpbb site)

Otherwise, chat, and themes and smileys are a snap to install on phpbb. I never tried manual install on SMF, but I noticed that all themes were seemingly "corrupt" for SMF 1.1.10

Which type of themes? Make sure you are using 1.1 themes one 1.1 and 2.0 themes on 2.0.

Otherwise you can PM me for support. I could fix it for some FP$

My SMF forum was really only for testing with forums in general, not a public forum (my public forum is phpbb however. I'd happily pay for help if one could help with phpbb mod installation, but it could only be with FP cash).
