Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Anyways I am curios which software is better.

probably should go in managing your forum 🙂

I would say phpbb because of mods available

Out of the two, phpBB I would say overall. However for ease of use on the admin side of things, SMF. For a cleaner user interface, phpBB.

I think MyBB beats both of the softwares for both the admin CP and the UI though.

SMF is much slower with it's releases. I've been using SMF for about 3 years, and when I first started using it 2.0 was either in alpha or beta stages. Currently it is in its 3rd RC, with another RC coming out before it goes Gold.
Themes wise, anything is better than MyBB. Most of the themes use the same basic layout, while SMF and phpbb allow it to be changed.

It comes down to what you think of it, look at each one and research more about them and make a decision.

But I would say phpBB over SMF in my opinion.

SMF has a better software overall, but phpBB has a better community. SMF used to be really good, but then as Krisute said, they got slower and slower (then a few guys' good SMF themes either got taken down or was demanded to be taken down because of the Amacythe fiasco). As for themes, every software has a lot of good and bad themes, to be perfectly fair. Either way, no one is going to ever beat the hidden gem in Theme/skin quality - IPB 2.3.

I long for the days of Creative Networks.

MyBB. So much more customizable. And soon, it'll surpass PHPBB (they're at a stalemate at the moment).

Yet I will refuse to user MyBB until somebody changes the boring ass index layout. The spacing is too generous, and quite frankly boring.

What if MYBB had VBulletin's styling?

What does vBulletin have to do with anything? I think the vBulletin looks worse than mybb. Unless styled correctly.

Krisute, you are given full access to the code, so you can adjust the layout all you want, you just have to put more work into it.

Has anybody changed it? I'm not saying it's impossible, but that nobodys done it, therefore it must be hard.

I really like PhpBB more than SMF. SMF is too simple. Even more simple than it's name points out.

I prefer mybb to other softwares, and I've tried vbulletin 3.x, phpbb 2.x and 3.x, smf 1.x, and various ipb (free version hosts).

I prefer mybb because I find the plugins simple to install and to get them to work. Most of the time, for me, I've found you just upload the plugin file, you locate you plugin setting within the mybb forum settings and you find the plugin name you uploaded and click activate and your done. I've done this for an antispam plugin, spoiler plugin, and the SEO plugin.

I was also able to easily integrate ads on the forum, and make my forums and sub-forums easy. Now I'm on a simple style, but I prefer that given the type of site that I host. One final note, I found out that Mybb 1.6 has built in embed for several video sites so you don't have to add tags to allow your users to add videos from sites like youtube for example.

And this summarizes my choosing of mybb.

Good Luck,
Andy.

I don't like phpBB cause the mods are a pain in the ass to install. SMF 2.0 has all the same features phpBB3 has, plus more

SMF for me.

I would suggest smf . Its acf isn't as clean as the others, but it is great software. I like the package system they use for mods aswell.

@People saying smf is simple, thats what it is suppose to be. It has what is needed on its core, anything else is a mod.
