SMF?

Well ... it may not be the software. I was dogged for the longest time, when i first came on the scene with a proboards forum. And I've beat the odds.
You just need to stick with whatever software you're comfortable with, and make sure to make a forum theme your die-hard about.
And, what was chibiwolf's house about. Cause doesn't sound at all familiar, except from your username. I've seen forums nme themselves after themself ... and those never work.

SMF is probably the msot secure (by ratings, review etc.) but it is all up to personal preference, if you have the cash I would recommend trying to head for Invision Power Board if you want a modern look and more community based features with their upcoming v3.0 release.
Go for it. SMF, in my opinion, is the best free forum software available. They've got a huge collection of themes and mods to choose from, and you can install them in seconds with just a few clicks unlike phpBB3 which makes you manually install them. The admin panel is very easy and user-friendly. Not only that, but SMF has great quick support as well. If you want to see some examples of SMF forums, check mine out:

I am not a big fan of SMF. Usually the forum software doesn't determine whether your forum is going to be a success or not. As said previously it is best to go with what you are confortable using and go with that you know how to use.

It is harder to update and in my opion is way too simple but it does have a good auto-mod installer.
Well personally I don't think the software is the most important thing, it is the content. Personally I don't find SMF hugely appealing, it does have one or two advantages over phpBB but I prefer the phpBB3 ACP and I also prefer the templates for phpBB.
I would personally start a forum on phpBB or if you have the money, IPB.

Its pretty straight forward I believe. If you have fantastico its a few clicks. Otherwise, extract to desired folder, change permissions old folders if needed, make a database and username for it, then run the installer which should be smfinstallation.com/install or something like that -happy-

I'm not into SMF. I'm familiar with many different forum software, even some that aren't popular, but SMF has been the hardest to get used to, development-wise.
I prefer: vBulletin, IPB, MyBB, phpBB
In that order. MyBB is the best free software, in my opinion.

Then create a MySQL database with a database user connected to it. Then point your browser at your main forum URL, and install SMF. You'll need connect your database with SMF. It may be confusing at first, but that's how it is.
