So, for many sites, social media can become an extension of your own site. Communities form, more discussion can take place, and a lot of the times interacting with others on social media can improve your site's traffic.

I use Facebook and Twitter to basically give first time visitors a look at what happens with the site. Also to gain more first time visitors.
