So, social media is one of the best advertising methods I've seen from personal experience. If used right, it can be an interactive promotional tool that reaches out to a wider audience and gives that audience a taste of your site before they ever step foot on your doors (this can obviously also be bad :C).
My question to you, site owner/professional/etc., is simple - how do you utilize social media? What social media sites have you found to work best? What type of posts do you use to attract the social media world? Let us know your social media strategy (or parts of it if you don't want to share) so we can take advice/offer advice for others!
Twitter I have to say is probably the most beneficial I have seen, Facebook is alright but let's be honest, their page feature is not as cool as having a Twitter account. 😛 (IMO anyway.)
I usually post with hashtags, things people will see and notice when browsing other posts with the same hashtag. I've been out of the game for a while, I have to get up to speed with the new social media standards again. 😛
I have seen not thing but YouTube can be the best top pull traffic. I have not used it for my website but I am considering it.
I am using Facebook, but I have not known the way so the result is not really good.
I've seen many webmasters and internet marketer use facebook fanpage to build their brand(not their site). Then putting in the site or services they want to promote. I think this help them get a lot more visitor based on their like counts.
Twitter is honestly the best. If you use hashtag correctly you can get a wider audience and it allows better communication with who you want to view your site.
I have always put a lot of effort into promoting my sites on social media but I still have not seen any results from doing it. I have had people comment on what great pages I have on social media but as yet have not had one member joining up on any of my forums from the social sites.
If you look at twitter and the text you allowed to post the only way to get the full story is to read it on the forum it is linked to. I have had constant re-tweets of a lot of my tweeted content but once again no hits on the forum from it.
If you ask me social media people just don't get the concept of forums so your time would be better spent focusing more on your forum itself.
