Social Network Groups

Ive seen many people making groups on Social Networks, including myself. In an attempt to gather more members and get a little more traffic. Has this ever worked for anyone? Have you yourself tried it? Do you think this a useful or useless method of advertising?

I only use Twitter to promote my site, I don't think as many people on forums use Facebook/Myspace and running/updating more then 1 social networking site would be very time consuming.
