I'm building a social networking/community portal site. What stuff would you want to see? :shrug: I've spent almost $100 on the site so anything involving money wouldn't matter to me, as long as it's within reason.

I don't think you should make one, Dan had planned one way out before and now there is going to be a trend of people lurking to find out how to build a social network and topic titles with idea's of a social network. Get on eBay, go do some Christmas shopping, treat yourself, take your money elsewhere and be good to yourself.

Well if you want to create a social network, you might want to do your studies. Get a team of developers, designers, a team that you can rely on and are close by, get some spare offices and all that and and start doing months of planning. Thats how Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, Ping and all that became to the level of what there at today.
I will say a few words to people that think they can compete against major SN and forums of course, think again and try again.

I would never compete against Facebook. It's crap 😉 Especially with the new layout they put up. And I won't be stubborn like everyone here and just promote to promotion forums. I'm willing to pay for promotion if needed 🙂

Well actually look at Theezy, he advertises everywhere, so does fantanoice, and Kik, I have saw there site on loads of other forums. I understand why you say you wouldn't want to compete against Facebook but I hardly think it is crap as it has 500 million users and nearly the best of the world uses it. If you want to create a SN, you can't just click your fingers and say this, you need to know the skills and know what your doing, know how to push forward.

Sooo... What other skills are there? I don't think you need to have a skill of paying for members and such. 😳

- Brainstorming your OWN ideas is always a good start.
- Being able to code a decent design and allowing extra room for expansion.
- Ability to potentially pay huge hosting bills.
- A good knowledge of hosting as you'll most likely be DDOS'd regularly.
