Software Conversions. Bad or Good?

If you want to create a professional looking forum then go for paid software, XenForo of course, many forums from vBulleting they are shifting to XenForo now.. you can check DigitalPoint as well.

I wouldn't say the IP.B to Xenforo switch would play out well. Yes, Xenforo has potential. But many communities thrive on IP.B very well.

Actually the conversion has generated a positive buzz around the forum. Lots of existing members have logged in and have been posting more. We have gotten some new members since the conversion as well. MyBB was a good choice for our community.

To be totally honest, you can't even tell you're on a free host at all... if anything, it's almost like you never left IPB in the first place.

Activity has actually gone up since we switched. Maybe its because IPB isn't as user friendly? Hmm :shrug:

How is IPB not user friendly? I've never used the paid version before so I don't know that much about it. Although I do remember having a hard time trying to add avatars and stuff as it seemed like there were a million and one settings to screw off with...

My claim is based on activity over the last week and a half, obviously. I'm not saying our activity is permanenlty higher, at no point could I ever say that because forums are unpredictable, Mr. Negative Nancy. 😛

The change can go both ways, if you can improve the look and feel of plus add some new features, it will work very positively, and if you get rid of some features that users like or work with due to the change, that will work very negatively. All else, users don't care much about the software, they just need good activity.
