I keep getting random bursts of traffic (around 20 guests) that appear at the same time and veiw the same thing, usually members... ive checked the ip's and they are all different, we only 1 have or 2 bots signup a day and they are quickly removed but this happens daily and i smell something fishy.

Maybe someone is using a proxy. I used to get that. Or you have done a Uptime check or something as that sends random IP's to your forum.

ah it could have been an uptime check then 🙂 my host is investigating some problems with the server that causes temporary slowness 🙂

Are their IPs totally different or all in the same range?

If they're all, say 123.123.123.X or 123.123.X.Y then it's likely they're all from the same company. It could be a search engine or something, I know Yahoo! sends a loads of robots

As Spyka said, their most likely the same company. I know when I had my forum, some Chinese search engine sent lots of bots everytime someone pinged the URL from their weird service.

Is this happening after you post your link to Twitter?

Yeah, it's probably a deal that's checking how good your uptime is. Because I seem to recall something similar happening when Pluto Hosting still had support forums: I think all forums do that though, don't they? Minus the bots, naturally.

We had the same issue @ Tikolah we had over 100 guests. I never see that much on a daily basis. Plus I get that problem when I post link on Twitter to my forums which bumps guest amount.

That's expected. Twitter has hundreds of bots roaming around so expect a hike in visitor/guest activity when ever you post your link.
