Name of Forum: Sour Grunt Productions

Type of Review: Forum Review
Date Forum Opened: September 25th, 2008
Demo Account for reviewer (Supplied by requester): Not required. The only thing guests do not have access to is the 3 other styles our forum has to offer.
Additional Notes: The "Staff", "Novelist" and "VIP" usergroups do not count as forum moderators.
Novelist isn't complete yet, therefore "Ratchet573" will have a name different than the rest because of the fact we haven't picked a color for Novelists yet. If the reviewer could possibly suggest a color for the usergroup, it would be very helpful.

Your Forum Review

First Impressions & Appearance - (Out of 20)
Your theme is very…plain looking. There’s nothing too exciting about it. It’s just gray. It’s very dull. Mind you, there’s nothing particularly bad with it, either. It’s just not something where I would go, “Woah! I want to join this forum.” or really have any feeling at all. I would look for a theme with more colors. Your logo is fine. I like how you have a favicon, that helps to have around. Another thing though that was a problem with your skin is that, even though my eyesite is fine, I cannot stand gray-on-gray text. Your site had multiple instances where there was gray text on a lighter gray background or vice versa. I do understand you have that “color” button which is cool and all, but it still doesn’t rectify all the other issues.
(Scored 12/20)

Site Layout - (Out of 20)
Your site layout is fine. Everything is organized correctly. There aren’t too many nor too little boards, and the amount of off-topic boards is fine. One thing is though you have a “Other Machinima” board, I don’t see the regular Machinima board. For your own productions, I mean. Is there one I’m just missing? Other than that it’s fine, and I don’t have any complaints.
(Scored 19/20)

Statistics and Activity - (Out of 20)
For a year and a half, your statistics really aren’t that great. 10,000 posts is a good amount, but when it’s been about 15 months since you’ve opened, that’s well under 1,000 posts/month, which is a milestone an active forum should be reaching. 160+ members is fine. Posts are spread well across the board, which is good. However, the Nintendo board could use some activity. Maybe you should do some more post exchanges to encourage new activity.
(Scored 15/20)

Staff Moderation - (Out of 20)
Your number of forum moderators is fine. You’ve only got a few. However, the user in your “staff” group has only 16 posts, which is very underwhelming. Also, some of your staff had low quality posts or really didn’t act to set an example. Staff should have high quality posts. As far as your usergroup color goes, maybe a bright cyan color. I think that would fit well.

Spelling/Grammar & Professionalism - (Out of 20)
I did notice a few errors:
“Not for the lulz. Type properly and be serious on the matter at hand.” should be, “Not for the lulz. Type properly, and be serious on the matter at hand.”
“Suggest Ideas for the forum, or post if you have problems using a forum's feature.
Please no Machinima Ideas here.” should be, “Suggest ideas for the forum, or post if you have problems using a forum's feature.
Please no Machinima ideas here.”
“Any Graphics and Off-Topic videos go here.. Within reason.” should be, “Any graphics and off-topic videos go here, within reason.”

Those were minor, however.

Final Remarks: Your forum was just another gaming forum, it needs something to make it stand above the rest.

What was most liked about the website/forums: Layout.

What was disliked most about the website/forums: Skin.

I only got a few responses to your review. All minor, but I do think the review was good.

This entire thing surprised me. However, when I get a Follow up review, I'll have a reviewer account ready so the reviewer, hopefully you, can check out the other styles we have.

There's a "Other Projects" forum, that is currently our Machinima forum. I'm thinking of changing it to just "Projects" because we really don't have a series we should have a forum for. Actually, I might as well do that right now.

"Staff" and "VIP" are the two ranks you can gain without even making a post. Staff are our machinima staff, and they aren't required to actually MAKE a post in Public forums, but rather write scripts, act for us, etc. They're given this title to represent them as Sour Grunt Staff, and not just some Schmoe.
VIP can be both an affiliate and/or a loyal member. Affiliates are just that - They don't HAVE to post though we do have a few posts coming from them once and a while.

As for the bright Cyan, we're changing up some of the staff colors, and this may not work with the lighter colors we may add, so it's questionable. It's the first time I thought about Cyan though. Thanks 🙂
