Does anyone know why spam bots prefer my profile comment system at FC rather than the actual forum? It also seems like they attack staff and not really the users.

I would change the settings so only registered members can post or set it so the profile comments have to be approved by the member who owns the profile.

I think its easier to be indexed by search engines rather than threads or posts on a message board.

I used to get spambots posting all over peoples profiles, in the blogs and all the places they are easily missed.

Have you tried adding anti-spam plugins? 🙂

There is different kinds of spam bots, there is profile spammers, post spammers, pm spammers and others.

Here at FP we do have a few profile comments spammers. The funny thing is that search bots can not index profiles on phpBB3 (unless an admin purposely allows them to).

The reason why they do it is some softwares and forums allow guests to view profiles. A spam bot can spam with a post but it is highly likely it will be deleted so no link back for them. Profile comments are a bit hidden and especially if they spam their own profile, it is less likely the spam will be found and they will still get a link back.

Yeah, they seem to spam their own profiles quite frequently on AF. The thing is that we have a recent status box on the forum list so we can see what people have wrote on their own profiles and they can be quickly delt with. They go for the blogs too which are quite out of the way and hard to notice.

 A spam bot spamming their own profiles?? Now that's a laugh right there! Spamming other people's profile is one thing, but to find them doing their own is something else all together!

They're out of luck on my forum. Member profiles {and their comments} are only viewable to other members. 🙂

With SFS, it totally depends how you use it. You can check usernames, emails or IP's or a combination of them. You can also check the frequency and the last seen date and take that into account when deciding if a user is a spammer. You can make it as strict or as precise as you want it really.

Well. Stopforumspam blocks me in most of the site that have it.
I checked with their database, and i can't find my IP address, Email or Username in it, and can't find any of them. That makes my case, an example for its false positives. 😀

For a start your username is in the database 24 times (if Kavin is the username your are referring to). Alot of sites check usernames against the database and without checking the frequency and the last seen date and it will cause alot of legit users being picked up. It tends to be how people use the info rather then the database itself.

One piece of the info must be in the database and I know that no other users have reported (correctly) that they are being blocked and none of their info is in the database.

Same here. On CT only members and staff can view one another's profile, leave comments in the user's guestbook, etc. Bots can't. I shudder at the thought of what we would have to do to clean out profile spam. To date we have almost 150 members, so that would be a load of profiles to clean out if all 150 were spammed! :shake:
