I am having and have had a Severe Spam Problem with one of my forums. It uses Mybb and I get bots from ukraine and russia all the time posing obscene things. I do not see a plugin to fix this and am unsure what to do about it. I can delete all the bad posts. But I want to stop the spam. I have banned ip's within mybb admin and on the server and it still continues. Due to the content being presented on the site pm me for the web address if you need it.

Thank you

Enable google recaptcha, make the mybb security questions tough.

I'd recommend creating (or editing if it already exists) the .htaccess file and banning all of Russia.
Use this site to generate the list of IPs in the proper format to add.
Step 1: make sure IPv4 is selected
Step 2: Choose the country from the menu (free accounts can only generate one block list at a time. But that's ok.)
Step 3: Select Apache 2.0 -2.3 or Apache 2.4 Deny (depending on which version of Apache your server runs. If you're not sure you can likely just choose 2.0 - 2.3 and you'll probably be ok.)

Once you have the list then copy/paste it into the .htaccess file and save it.

After that I'd also recommend getting a copy of Zinga Burga's Spamalyzer plugin and updating it to MyBB 1.8 (instructions to do that are in that topic). From there you can tweak the settings as needed. (That plugin does a pretty amazing job of keeping spam out. I've seen people run forums with a guest friendly ad section on MyBB because of that plugin because of how good it is at clearing out spam...)

I had a small spam issue when I first started my forum, but once I enabled Stop Forum Spam (http://www.stopforumspam.com/- but included with MyBB), configured it correctly, it pretty much went away. Combined with IP banning any spammers and CAPTCHA on registration I only have the occasionally spammer.

It's been over a week since any replies, so I'm going to archive this for now. 🙂
