If I register my forum name like mxproject on a lot (100-1000s) of social networks, forums, blog sites, social bookmarking sites, and domain names to promote my forum's link across the hundreds of free social networking and free membership sites which allow posting of links on signatures and profile pages.

Would it be consider spammy which can get me punish by Google, and Yahoo even though I follow the rules and not spam links on topics on forums, or other peoples profile on the site?

I doubt you'll be punished but it would be an idea to vary between a few names I'd think.

We do it to help keep track of usernames. We use an excel sheet to keep track, but it gets pretty lame having to remember a million usernames and passwords.

I guess its being spammy registering for 100's of sites with or without the same name.

Re: Spammy to register same username for lots of social site

I find it easier to register with the same username at forums and networking sites alike. I've done different usernames in the past, but it got too confusing as I had one username for one forum and another one for a different site. I'll only use different usernames if the name I want to use is already in use by another member. But that's usually as a last resort.

I guest by registering your forums username for most of the popular websites and social networks. You can also reduce the chance of someone pretending to be your forum to spread false rumours to ruin your reputation.

I read that a lot of big companies register all the popular domain extensions and names related to their forum.

Like how Joomla.com also registered Joomla.org, but they both point to the same website.

Exactly! I know last year on an old forum I had we had two domains as well. One was chattingtime.com and the other one was chattingtime.info (I think) but they both redirected to the same forum. So really, sometimes having more than one of the same thing can actually be a good thing, really.

A campaign of rapid registrations will likely flag you up to a forum owner who carries out cross-checks before authorising the account. Some may even add you to a spam database as multiple registrations (with 0 posts) is a combat indicator of 'sleepers'.

🙂

Re: Spammy to register same username for lots of social site

Your using the same name to register will not cause any type of Google retribution unless that user name starts posting massive spam to these sites or other bad things. Using the same user name for multiple sites is a very common practice. As you pointed out having different user names for every different site is extremely difficult to say the least.

Besides, you are your forum so to speak, or website or whatever. Creating these accounts is nothing more than branding your identity just as if you went to these same sites and used your actual real name for each one of them, you are creating an identity. So the only risk you are really running is if you do anything questionable or opinionated on any of these sites that would turn some people off toward your identity. Example would be going in and posting in the controversial social issues of a forum and voicing an opinion, for those that hold a different opinion than your own in a very heart felt way would be dead set against your company, forum, website from then on out.

Repeat posting, posting the same exact posts to multiple forums (if doesn't get you in trouble with the forum mods) will not give you a bad mark with Google either, it simply will only be counted the first few times and lowering the link juice attached to those posts...so the more that are out there the less the effectiveness of the posts

How would this be flagged?

Yeah, I don't understand this myself. Just because a person registers the same username on every forum/social network out there, that does not automatically make him or her a spammer. Nor does this mean that they are seriously likely to cause trouble. Sometimes people prefer to use their same username for everything. Maybe they've been on forums/social network sites for years and it's the name they've always felt comfortable registering with. So I think that just because you like using the same username on sites, that does not make you a "ban on site" nor does it make you a troublemaker by any means.

Probably not, because a forum owner would need to be in association with many other forums, and have genuine concern before the username being submitted to spam databases. You would be signing up once on a forum, and signing up once on another forum, independent of each other.

Exactly. Seems a little strange, unless one of the sites you are registered on you did spam.
