Hi, over at my forum https://www.graspphp.org/forum I use a HTTPS connection. I have seen lots of posts of people saying that this is not important for a forum, but I think they are wrong. What do you think? Here are my reasons:

-When the user sees the green HTTPS connection they feel safe to sign up.
-Users feel like their valuable passwords are secure, as well as their email addresses.
-Users feel that they cannot be spied on by a hacker when browsing the site.

I guess a down side might be speed? Please visit and have a little look at the speed and tell me what you think. Is this really a downside???

I don't know about other people who sign up to forums so I can only speak personally. For me, I associate SSL with the billing area of the site. I don't see it as necessary on a forum and I think it looks out of place.

That is a good point, but in my forum I specifically say that membership is and always will be free. I see your point though and thanks for the feedback πŸ™‚

I think it's fine if you want to do it, but I doubt it will make a whole lot of difference. In the end, people are either going to visit your site, or not, and I doubt this will convert more users. It's unique though, there's no real downside except for the cost of a SSL certificate.

I like the idea, but its not worth it since your wasting $60-100 dollars yearly or monthly on SSL certificates, its a great loss.

Cheaper ones don't cost that much... πŸ˜‰ Some cost $10 a year...

But, still your wasting $10 dollars on something that's non-important for a forum. Your forum seldom get hacked by anyone else.

Yes, it does, one forum got hacked the other day it was an amazing forum called Librivox someone hacked one of their admin's account; stole all passwords and ran off. They know the hackers will crack the passwords in a matter of moments and their passwords were encrypted, but there forum wasn't. This will be a great shield of protection.
