Here's an article on the subject.

Do you think it's a good or bad idea to have SSL on a forum? Benefits include security and good SEO. Negatives include some issues with advertisers not being able to see that traffic is coming from your site, and general slowness.

Do you use SSL? Is it a good idea?

I use SSL on FeedbackExchange. 🙂 Works pretty well, but it's also not for every site.

Personally I think nowadays it would be worthwhile to use SSL on a forum. People are more security conscious now and look for the padlock when using a site and submitting sensitive data.

It's good to use but not beneficial for small blogs.
It is well suited for eCommerce and huge sites.

With Let's Encrypt coming soon that offers free quality SSL certificates, I think more and more forums will start adding SSL certificates to their forums, and I honestly agree they should, especially if they sell anything on their forum like some softwares allow. I would probably join a forum with a certificate rather than one that doesn't, it's nice to see people taking security into consideration. 😀
