Well its not just by accident that a forum has staff all from the same country. The internet is filled with billions of people. Saying 'I couldnt find anyone' or 'Nobody applied' is just an excuse I think. Not everyone on my forum applied for a job. Some of them I have asked if they would like to join the team.
At my forum I have an admin from Australia, from Scotland, and the other from the USA. As for the global mods: two from the uk, one from canada, and one from australia.
The rest of the staff all come from various countries as well. All of them are great staff members and they all do their job great. Having staff from all over the world sends out a message to the members that we are welcoming of anyone from anywhere and there is no reason to feel like an outcast. Other forums should follow that example. 🙂
It can send out a good message but when I do visit a forum I don't check where the staff are from because they are people just like everybody else regardless of where they are from. If you are looking for staff and people from all over the world are applying but you are only picking the ones from you country then yeah there is a case for discrimination.
'Location' is right under a persons avatar on most softwares. Also its not that hard to figure it out when all the staff is online at the same time all the time. And other times its a ghost town. On these forums I see with staff all from the same area, they tend to acknowledge the regular members from their own country more and tend to overlook others and not interact with them as much. Then its pretty obvious to figure out why their staff is all from the same area.
I know that location is under a members avatar but as I said if I go to a forum I couldn't care less where the members and staff are from. As long as I get treated the same as other members then there is no problem.
Although it is good to have staff from all over the world it shouldn't matter where they are from.
Correct me if i am wrong but isn't the main aspects of hiring some ones the following:
Their ability and knowledge to do the job
Their activity and dedication
And if you trust the person or not
Hiring people from all over the world is good and well but is it really worth it if it means hiring people that aren't maybe as good as other people? The timezones should be irrelevant through out the process of hiring staff. It should be based on the above points.
Staff in different timeszone would be good but sometimes it is more down to where abouts in the world most of your members come from and where in the world most people that want to be staff come from. If you open up a job and 4 people apply and they are all from the same time zone and one is really good... Are you saying that you should turn them down and approach someone from a different timezone who maybe wouldn't do as good a job? That would become discriminating if you are deliberately taking into account peoples locations and choosing staff based on that. Thee is no point having staff on all around the clock if they are not good at their job is there?
I just find it odd when people tend to decide that mainly people from their own country are the ones that can do the job to the best of their ability. Its odd how thousands of forums can find people from all around the world who can do a job to the best of their ability but others can only find people from their own country. Like I said its usually no accident that some forums only have staff from their own country and its not really sending out a good message to everyone else.
