There are 2 things relating to this.

1) If you do have a staff area on your forum, do you create an entirely new category and make only staff able to see it, or do you make a board and place it under an 'off topic' category, but make it so only staff can see in the board (but guests and members can see the board is there)?

2) Doesn't it get annoying when members cry because they can't see what's said in the staff board? "I wanna see what's said about me" oh nag. If only they'd actually BEHAVE there wouldn't be a need to talk about them in the staff room.

I just make a separate category hidden from the rest of the users and guests. If it's allowed by the forum's software, I think it's the best, as having an inaccessible staff area externally viewable by the users and guests is a bit (IMO) intimidating.

Actually, in all honesty, till I began working as staff on forums, I never knew staff had their own forums. Call me stupid, but I really didn't...

I've got a forum where only certain groups can see it. Really useful for behind the scenes talk.

I've got a Category called "Fire Exit' which stores the Elite, Staff and administrators forum. I wouldn't just create a category for one forum.

My users are blind to the staff forum. We do not say that there is even one. We don't deny it, we just never bring it up.

I have a staff board and an ambassadors board on Parascifi.

The Ambassadors have their own group too as they are the (hopeful) donators.

Staff forums are good to have. It's helpful to be able to communicate with staff on issues regarding the site, that don't need to be discussed in public. Topics discussed in the staff forum should be treated as confidential by all staff and should not be discussed in the public forums.

I have a staff category for my forum. It contains the trash can and three staff forums. I have a staff group that is making content for the main site so they have their forum for planning. Then I have another one for the editors group that critique stories. The main staff forum is for the mods and admins.

This category is invisible to guests and ordinary members.

I would make a own new category for a staff forum and would make it only Admin and the staff can see or post in it.

We have two inside an existing category - The Boiler Room (for moderators) and CSI: The Null Chamber (for administrators.)

It doesnt matter where you put it as long as its invisible. Leaving it visible to everyone else and not allowing them access is like taunting them.

Never had that happen. I have had people try to get on staff so they can spy for a competitor forum before though.

That is sad, trying to "spy" on a competitor, what they gonna do, tell who they are talking about 😱
