Do you allow your staff to help you hire or fire staff members? Why or why not?

Sometimes I do, but it's usually only in emergencies. Although I sometimes let them do it even if I don't have an emergency. All staff applications are reviewed/discussed on a census kind of thing. Usually what happens is we talk it over as a group, and then if we all agree that they might be suitable for a position, then I or another admin will notify the applicant about our decision.

I don't let them "help" me hire and fire staff members. I'll ask them what they think of "this user." We'll evaluate their posts, threads, skills, etc. And then the final decision will be made by the administrators.

I allow my staff some times to help me hire people, If im not sure about a group of applications, I will ask the team of their thoughts and if they give some good suggestions, I will normally act on them.

Feedback is always nice but I prefer to do the hiring and firing myself (unless of course I have a co-founder/owner 😉 )

Typically, no. I prefer to find and hire people myself. With that being said, if a team member recommends someone, I always look into them and most of the time they are hired on a probationary period.

I do a mix of this.

Here at Forum Promotion, we leave hiring up to the Team Leaders. I highly encourage them to discuss their hires with team members before acting, and many of them do!

I think having a team looking at new members further involves the team in what's going on, as well as allows the team to find someone that would fit their goals and style much better.

We don't have team leaders like that, as our site isn't big/active enough yet, but our system is similar to yours.

Hiring staff is up to everyone on the admin team as well as the leaders of each group. All of the staff have input on whether they think a user should be hired, because in all honesty they will be working with that user on a daily basis, so if they cannot get along with them than I'd rather find out before we hire them rather than after we hire them. (Gosh that would be a mess..)

But at the end of the day, the admins and leaders will decide on whether we want to hire them or not - and it's our responsibility to listen to the rest of the staff and take in their suggestions.

Now if we cannot agree on something, we open it to all of the staff and let that settle things. 😛

In my opinion, you shouldn't hire staff without the opinions of your current staff. If you don't do this, it's not really all that fair. These people will all be working together so you need to properly discuss new hires with your team. Figure out what the needs and wants are also so you can accurately hire based on what's important to others.
