I've noticed that some websites start their blog, and then wait about 10 days and add a forum, and it just goes haywire. First of all, you need a traffic base. You can't just start something else, thinking that it'll be populous. It doesn't work that way.

Main tips for starting a site:
  • Get a domain - this will boost traffic and will be more memorable than example.thisisalonghostwebsitename.com. Get a popular, credible gTLD. Like .com, .net and .org.
Do not get a co.cc domain! There are many reasons not to get one.
    Some of them are:
    • It will decrease your chance of appearing on Google, due to spammers using the TLD.
    • Since it is free, It is used by spammers. Some people may think it's not legit and could think that it is a spam/splog site.
    • and there's the rest...
But if you want to get one, I don't care. The web is your oyster....

  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS and other scripts. - If you know about ALL that, then it is good to start a website. If you are running a fansite, and know a few bits, you can ask a web designer to design it for you. People will join/visit your site if you have a good design.

  • Security - It matters most. There are loads of plugins and codes you need to add, just to boost security. Backup is very important. Make sure you know what you are doing!!

  • Getting a traffic/fan base - It is important to get a traffic base for your website. And if you have the time, you can make money from your website hits! It takes time getting a community.

  • Community opinions - they really count. You can add a feedback form to see messages from visitors on how you can improve the site. See this FP post for more information.

  • Help - If your doing something else, or just really busy, you can recruit staff to lessen the stress of having to backup and do updates. You must recruit people you trust, otherwise it can go haywire! Don't be afraid to say no...

  • Content - is the key feature for websites. If your site has bad content, and stuff that they don't really like, they will leave your site.

  • Link Weaving - Add lots of links to different parts of the site so it can get some visitors. But don't make it look spammy! Here's an example site: http://2createawebsite.com/.

  • Post, even though you don't have any comments... - You would expect people to post when your site has just started. But it doesn't happen right away. And then you start posting fake anon comments. It doesn't work and that's not called a community!!! Just post and hope! Remember to add good content - this can increase your chances of your images and posts appearing on Google. Again, It takes time to build a community.

  • 'GRRR! My forum/site isn't getting popular! I've started 3 days and no activity has been happening!' - Yep. We've all heard that somewhere in the forums! Again, It takes time! In life you can't just make things come to you. You have to make it happen. Every newbie must of had that experience!

Those are a few of my tips. I'll be updating more thoughts soon! 😀

I just keep a blog, nothing else, I don't wanna add a forum, because too much of a problem.

You forgot one of the most important things. Content ;P
My bad... added now.

Content is an obvious one though, but it ties in with the last point of complaining your site sucks when it's only been open for a day. I agree with your entire post, good points and simply put. If only everyone had this frame of mind...

since its a natural one, then it shouldn't have been there, so yeah. XDD

A tad short sighted, Blogs are good for SEO, Google loves blogs because the majority of them have very original content, adding a blog as a sub domain to your forum can increase your PR and traffic given time, quicker than having a stand alone forum.
