I am considering starting a new host. I know you need reseller hosting but do you need a server?

You don't need to own a server to start hosting. But is you don't own a server bare in mind that there will be quite a few people also hosted on that server.

All you need is a reseller, ~smile~

If you buy your own server you pay all kinds of fees for software, hardware replacement, maintenance..etc etc...

I can't afford a server anyway. Also for the site Christian, I am considering asking you to make one if possible. Do you want to take this to PM?

As you grow you would need a VPS or a dedicated server but to start off you just need a reseller account.

Would it be a forum host of a webhost with cpanel?

It's also helpful to google search for some hosting companies and do some research of your own through those sites.

A webhost.

I looked at plans on hostgator and site5 and they don't offer enough

Heart internet seem the best option

Do you have enough experience with the CPanel and web management to run this, or are you going to hire someone to help with that?

I might get Christian to help out as I have a very good offer for him.

Thank you, your welcome to host your site at my host if I go ahead with the host.

I do have some knowledge of what I am doing zai.
I woul be sure that you do as running a host is alot harder then a forum and what you use cpanel for now. Baring in mind you a month or so ago you didn't have a clue how to install mods i don't think you will have learnt enough over the last month or so to be able to run a host and sort out any issues you have on top of helping you customers with their problems as you can't rely on just other people to help people with support and if it is caused by something you need to fix you need to know how to sort it out as it doesn't look professional if the problem is on your end and you say you don't know how to sort it out.

It would be hard I agree, it may not happen even. What sort of problem are you suggesting? Site down? I'd look and reply with an answer, whether the DNS has crashed or the reseller host's server had crashed.

Not only that but it can be anything such as mod_security could be interfering with scripts making them work incorrectly and could cause errors for people. If you have a basic reseller you might not be able to solve this yourself and may need to inform you host to make changes to mod_security so it doesn't interfere but at first you need to be able to work out that it was that causing the problem as you customers might not know and you need to have some knowledge to be able to discuss these issues with your host to get them sorted and to get them sorted quickly. If you go to a vps as your host grows to big you would have access to more things like the firewall and so on so you would need to not only work out what the issue is but how to fix it yourself.

Sites being down are the easy problems to deal with as you can just say the server is down and so on but if there is a problem affecting user or 1 script you need to be able to find out what is causing it and either fix it yourself if possible or tell the host what to change as giving them the error might not get it sorted as quick as if you work out exactly what the problem is yourself as my experience with hosts is that usually my mum knows more about servers then them and they will usually say it is nothing to do with the servers however if you find out exactly what the issue is they fix it... Even though it wasn't an issue with the server apparently until you work it out yourself. You may choose to be a host that just replies with everything as that is not something we can sort out or it is a problem with the script when it isn't but it doesn't make you look professional when the person asking for support works out what the issue is and how to fix it and it does end up being a server issue. Also it doesn't look good on you either if people believe you and end up think i can't use this script here as that will put them off using you.

Your concerns are very good points.

If there is a script problem I would need someone to help as my computer knowledge isn't that great. To be honest I don't think I know enough to start a host after the points you have raised 😛

I quite often used google for problems here as one issues here previously was a 406 error when posting and i didn't know why and support were less then helpful but i used google and found it was possible a mod security issue and i found a nice bit of code which disabled mod_security and it worked so then i told the host and they fixed it. No doubt if i didn't it would have been solved as quick as it had been hours of replies to actually make me research where the problem was. It was quite bad that the host could fix it but it shows that you can run a host with not much knowledge but people will get annoyed if things don't get fixed and they end up finding the fix for the error themselves.
